Joe Warren Removed from Saturday’s Bellator 98 Fight Card Over Medical Concerns

Former Bellator featherweight champion Joe Warren has been removed from Saturday’s Bellator 98 fight card . The Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation, the regulating body for Saturday’s event at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn., deemed Warren ineligible after reviewing the medical documentation he submitted. Bellator officials on Friday released a statement announcing the change. “I’ve been fortunate to work with one of the best commissioners in the sport in Mike Mazzulli, and after carefully reviewing Joe’s medical documents, everyone agreed to err on the side of caution with the goal of ensuring our fighters safety,” said Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney

The writing was on the wall when Invicta FC on Tuesday announced it had signed former Bellator fighter Felice Herrig to a multi-fight contract, and then Jessica Eye and Jessica Aguilar , two of the top female fighters around, announced via Twitter that Bellator had released them from their contracts. With those three powerhouses gone, Bellator was left with zero women on its roster. The UFC currently has an iron grip on the women’s bantamweight (135-pound) division, ruled by champion Ronda Rousey . Invicta FC – an all women’s fight promotion – is the go-to home for the rest of women’s MMA, with most of the best women in the world fighting for the fledgling promotion. That left Bellator with very few options when trying to line up legitimate competitors for the fighters it had under contract. Bellator MMA hasn’t officially dissolved its women’s division. But with no women left on its roster, there may not be a home for those fighters in the promotion any time soon. Word got out on Tuesday that Jessica Eye (10-1) had been let go by Bellator, and Tuesday also saw an announcement from all-female promotion Invicta Fighting Championship that former Bellator fighter Felice Herrig (9-4) had signed. Jessica Aguilar (15-4) most recently fought for Bellator in March. Those three were the last remaining women on Bellator’s roster, and on Tuesday night promotion CEO Bjorn Rebney issued a statement on the state of the California-based company’s women’s division. “Jessica Eye, Jessica Aguilar and Felice represent all that is good in women’s MMA,” Rebney stated. ”Both Eye and Aguilar are ranked No. 1 in the world in their respective divisions and carry themselves with class and distinction elevating the women’s game. I’ve said many times that fighters need to fight and fight often. Given our current focus, we are not in position to provide these very deserving women regular and reoccurring fights on a large platform. And, I felt it was best to let them go and secure options that did. I genuinely wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors and will be rooting for each of them wherever they fight.” For Herrig, a strawweight, that opportunity will now come with Invicta. Aguilar, who went 5-1 as a strawweight for Bellator, and is on a six-fight win streak, may have to look Invicta’s direction, as well

The last fight on Ben Askren ‘s Bellator MMA deal is in the books, and the promotion’s welterweight champion delivered yet again with perhaps his most dominant performance to date. Now CEO Bjorn Rebney finds himself in a position he’s been in before – hoping to keep one of his champions rather than lose him to the competition. Rebney on Wednesday confirmed to MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) that Askren’s win over Andrey Koreshkov at this past week’s Bellator 97 card was the last fight on his current deal. Rebney also said he’s unsure of what steps the promotion will take in negotiations with Askren (12-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA), who has a standard exclusive negotiating period with Bellator built into his deal before he can seek offers from other promotions. In the past, as was the case with former lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez , Rebney waived the exclusive period and let Alvarez test the market early. He got an offer from the UFC, Bellator attempted to match it and now the entire case is tied up in the legal system with Alvarez’s side saying Bellator’s counter-offer was not a true match
