In the main event, something went horribly awry. Nah-Shon Burrell (13-6) couldn’t make weight for a welterweight title fight against reigning champion Chris Curtis (13-5) on Thursday, which left Friday’s AXS TV-televised headliner at Foxwoods Resort & Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., a non-title bout.

He missed weight by six pounds for his welterweight title bout with Chris Curtis , and while he didn’t get the belt, was gifted one of the worst decisions of the year. Burrell (13-6) came in massively overweight for Friday’s bout with Curtis (13-5), which headlined the AXS TV-televised event at Foxwoods Resort & Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., forcing the promotion to alter the scheduled contest to five rounds of non-title catchweight fighting. The champion Curtis still showed his comfort in the confines of a 25-minute framework, though, because he lulled Burrell into his pace of fighting and had a strong argument to win four, if not all five rounds.

His break from competition was by choice, he said, since he’s no longer just a fighter: He’s also a promoter. Despite winning 11 of his past 12 bouts, Kattar (14-2) hasn’t fought since June 2013. He gets back to work tonight, however, when he faces Kenny Foster (11-10) in the co-main event of CES MMA 34 at Foxwoods Resort & Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. The main card airs on AXS TV. Kattar’s absence from the competitive side of the sport was self-imposed, he said.
