Yohan Lainesse claimed the CFFC welterweight title from Evan Cutts on Saturday with a stoppage that some viewed as questionable. After a back-and-forth striking fight for seven minutes, Lainesse (7-0) got the TKO of Cutts (12-5) at the 2:17 mark of Round 1 in the CFFC 98 headliner courtesy of a plethora of body shots. Referee Gasper Oliver stopped the fight before Cutts dropped to the ground or folded due to the body shots, which caused the now ex-champion to protest in the immediate aftermath. Nevertheless, Lainesse was awarded the belt to take back home to Canada after the main event bout, which took place at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia and streamed on UFC Fight Pass. Lainesse started the fight with an incredibly high striking output coming from both the hands and feet.

After one of the most grueling title wins in CFFC history, you’ll forgive reigning welterweight champ Evan Cutts if he’s not exactly intimidated by the next test in front of him. Sure, he knows undefeated challenger Yohan Lainesse brings some impressive tools to the cage, but Cutts also knows a thing or two about fighting vaunted strikers. “I feel like I’m 7- or 8-1 against undefeated guys,” Cutts said. “I think twice now I fought some knockout artist that was supposed to knock me out in the first round, and they did not, and they lost. I’ve had other fights with other tough guys before.” Coming from any other fighter, Cutts ‘ words might ring a bit hollow

Dealing with a loss was a new feeling for Santo Curatolo , and one the former CFFC champ doesn’t really want to get all too familiar with moving forward. But the 26-year-old flyweight says he learned the lessons needed and is now ready to start storming through the division once again. “I’m just really looking forward to getting back in there and showing everybody that all that hype about me wasn’t a fluke,” Curatolo said. “Just get back in there and perform and do what I’ve always done and get my title back.” Curatolo opened his professional career with five straight first-round finishes and seemed destined for a spot in the UFC. However, this past October, Alberto Trujillo spoiled those plans and went toe-to-toe with Curatolo before stopping him in the second round. Nasty leg kicks were a huge part of Trujillo’s arsenal, and it left Curatolo dealing with complications after the contest.

Undefeated welterweight Yohan Lainesse is perhaps best known to MMA fans for his viral flying-knee knockout of Lirim Rufati – a stunning, 14-second finish that made highlight reels around the globe. But Lainesse believes he actually gained more in his most recent outing, a unanimous decision win over a previously undefeated Troy Green in March. “I’m very satisfied about this performance because I know I’m not the kind of guy that has a lot of experience in the cage,” Lainesse said. “So, of course, the flying knee was a very good highlight, and I’m very happy about that, but I think it’s time for me in my young career to have a lot of experience in the cage.
