Cat Zingano expects to be cleared to return to fighting in February

Undefeated UFC women’s bantamweight contender “Alpha” Cat Zingano (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) expects to return to the octagon in six months. Zingano on Thursday posted a YouTube video of her attending surgeon, Dr. Ronald Kvitne of Los Angeles’ Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, delivering her news that she should be able to return to full training in approximately four months and fighting two months later. Earlier this year, Zingano underwent an ACL replacement surgery. The injury was costly, pulling her out of a planned coaching slot opposite Ronda Rousey on the soon-to-debut “The Ultimate Fighter 18″ series, as well as a December shot at the UFC women’s bantamweight belt. Miesha Tate , a fighter Zingano defeated in April, stepped in to fill Zingano’s slot both on the series and in the championship bout. Zingano, who injured herself during her strength and conditioning routine, also suffered a torn meniscus, as well. Since the surgery, which involved using a cadaver’s Achilles tendon to replace the ACL, Zingano has been focused on an intense physical therapy routine in an effort to get back to peak form.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship released the attendance and gate figures for Saturday’s UFC on Fox 8: Johnson vs. Moraga event in Seattle at the post fight press conference. 7,816 spectators went to KeyArena to witness the 12-fight card, resulting in $735,000 in gate revenue. Demetrius Johnson defended his UFC flyweight title by submitting challenger John Moraga in the final round of the main event. Johnson’s speed and ability to get the fight to the ground kept Moraga neutralized throughout the championship bout. In the final round, Johnson secured a takedown and applied an arm bar that forced Moraga to tap out or suffer injury. Rory MacDonald proved his top-three welterweight ranking by defeating Jake Ellenberger by a clear unanimous decision in the co-main event. The night of fights also featured Robbie Lawler adding another highlight reel knockout to his career highlights with a knockout of Bobby Voelker and Liz Carmouche becoming the first female fighter to log two fights in the UFC with her technical knockout win over Germain de Randamie. She nearly caught Rousey in a submission that night. If that weren’t enough to make believers out of her doubters, Carmouche’s follow-up performance at UFC on Fox 8 on Saturday night should make converts of the remaining skeptics. Carmouche stepped in the Octagon with 21-year-old Brazilian fighter Jessica Andrade in Seattle, immediately taking control. She put Andrade up against the cage early, but quickly took her to the mat, employing her harsh ground and pound attack. Carmouche looked like she might just run away with the fight, but Andrade someone regained her feet late in the round and slammed Carmouche to the canvas. Frankie Edgar Hopes a Win Over Charles Oliveira at UFC 162 Will Move Him Closer to Another Title Fight

Former UFC champion Frankie Edgar will do something he hasn’t done in years when he faces Charles Oliveira in a featherweight match-up at UFC 162 on July 6 in Las Vegas. He’ll compete in a non-title fight for the first time since 2009, and hopes a win over Oliveira will move him closer to another championship bout. “One step closer toward a title shot,” said Edgar when asked what a win over Oliveira would mean. Oliveira (16-3, 1 No Contest) is 2-1 as a featherweight and nine of his 16 wins have come by submission. “I think he’s a dangerous fighter, long and rangy with slick submissions,” Edgar said about his opponent in a chat on UFC.com . “I guess his slick submission game might be the biggest threat.” Edgar made his featherweight debut at UFC 156 on Feb. 2, losing to champion Jose Aldo by decision. His speed and footwork was an advantage for him in the lightweight division, and he doesn’t believe anyone at 145 pounds is going to have a speed advantage over him

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is slated for a special Fighter’s Cut episode of UFC Tonight on Fuel TV on Tuesday night. During Fighter’s Cut, Rousey sits down and recounts what was going through her head as she walked out for her first championship bout with Miesha Tate . That was when Tate was the Strikeforce champion and Rousey was the “undeserving” challenger whose credentials were being called into question. While many questioned whether she should be in the cage with Tate, Rousey remembers the time fondly, saying, “Let the two pretty girls fight, everybody will love it.” Rousey and Tate have now swapped places as the head into coaching stints on The Ultimate Fighter Season 18 , and then square off at series’ end with Rousey’s UFC belt on the line.
