Fresh Off UFC on Fox 8 Victory, Jorge Masvidal Agrees to Fight Rustam Khabilov in November

Just a couple days removed from his last fight, Jorge Masvidal already has his next bout lined up. Masvidal will meet Rustam Khabilov, likely on Nov. 6 on Fox Sports 1, according to a UFC Tonight report on Tuesday. UFC president Dana White has stated that Nov. 6 is the target date for the promotion’s next UFC Fight for the Troops event. It would be the promotion’s third such event, which is typically used as a fundraiser for charities that benefit members of the military and their families. Masvidal (25-7) is fresh off of his second-round victory over Michael Chiesa at Saturday’s UFC on Fox 8 event in Seattle.

Jorge Masvidal vs. Rustam Khabilov set for November UFC on FOX Sports 1 card

That didn’t take long. Jorge Masvidal moved to 2-0 in the UFC on Saturday, and he’s already got his next assignment. Masvidal (25-7 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has been booked for a lightweight fight against Rustam Khabilov (16-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC). FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight” correspondent Ariel Helwani reported the news as part of Tuesday night’s episode. The fight reportedly will take place in November on a yet-to-be-announced FOX Sports 1 card. Masvidal this past Saturday submitted Michael Chiesa in the second round at UFC on FOX 8, which took place at KeyArena in Seattle. Despite a rough first round in which Masvidal was dropped by a Chiesa left hand, he went on to hand Chiesa his first career loss with a guillotine D’Arce choke. Masvidal, a former lightweight title challenger in Strikeforce, now has won three straight since his loss to Gilbert Melendez for that belt in December 2011.

The lightweight bout closed out the preliminary card of today’s UFC on FOX 8 event at KeyArena in Seattle. It aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on FOX. Chiesa’s first professional loss was not without some bright spots. In the opening round he showed off improved striking, dropping Masvidal with a left hand before nearly finishing him with a guillotine choke. In the second frame, however, it was Masvidal who threatened with submissions, eventually locking up the D’Arce in the waning moments of round two

It’s been a year since Rafaello Oliveira appeared in the UFC. His most recent fight wasn’t a loss, so he wasn’t cut and then asked to return for a fight with Edson Barboza at Saturday’s UFC 162. He is, however, stepping in to replace John Makdessi in a fight most believe he will lose. Oliveira has gotten the axe once before in his time with the UFC, but fought his way back. This time, he aims to pull off a big upset. Unfortunately, the Brazilian’s hands repeatedly have held back his career. The problems started two years ago, when he broke his right hand in a losing effort against Yves Edwards at UFC on Versus 6. He was supposed to fight Reza Madadi next, but re-injured his hand in training. Then he fought Yoislandy Izquierdo despite the same problem. Then he broke his hand two weeks prior to fighting “The Ultimate Fighter 15″ winner Michael Chiesa , and that fight was scratched. The fight card for next month’s UFC on FOX 8 event is set with the official lineups for the FX and Facebook portions of the preliminary card. “UFC on FOX: Johnson vs. Moraga” takes place July 27 at KeyArena in Seattle. The main card, including a flyweight title fight between champion Demetrious Johnson (17-2-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) and top contender John Moraga (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC), airs on FOX. Prior to the four-fight FOX lineup, nine fights take place on the prelims.
