Several fighters controlled their destinies at Invicta FC 6, including Claudia Gadelha and Leslie Smith . Gadelha stepped up on short notice to fight Ayaka Hamasaki on Saturday night, stepping in for injured strawweight champion Carla Esparza. It was a risky fight for Jewels 115-pound champion Hamasaki, who lost the bout via TKO stoppage to Gadelha. Not only did Hamasaki suffer the first defeat of her career, she also lost her title shot. With the victory, Gadelha earned the shot at Esparza when the champion returns from a knee injury suffered in training. With her unanimous decision victory over Jennifer Maia, Leslie Smith also earned title shot.

One day, Claudia Gadelha might wind up doing something a little more business suit-y. Or maybe she’ll be working for Brazil’s police force. But right now, she’s enjoying being a one-woman force of her own. Gadelha (10-0) makes her Invicta Fighting Championships debut today against Ayaka Hamasaki (9-0), and she’ll be hoping to stay unbeaten. Gadelha was in college studying law, but she put her studies on hold and made fighting her top priority. It hasn’t turned out too badly yet. Invicta FC strawweight champion Carla Esparza (9-2) is injured, so Ayaka Hamasaki (9-0) will meet replacement Claudia Gadelha (9-0) at Invicta FC 6. Gadelha tweeted news of the change on Saturday, though an official announcement wasn’t made. Esparza, though, today tweeted news of a knee injury following a report from MMAFighting.com . As Esparza wrote on Twitter: “I am devastated, there is no worse thing for an athlete to experience. I have had this injury for a few weeks, but kept training and did what I could because that’s what fighters do, we fight through things even when they are tough. I was still planning to fight, until I recently discovered a tear was confirmed.
