RIO DE JANEIRO – It took some time, but Ian McCall finally knows what it feels like to get a win in the UFC. “Uncle Creepy” used both his speed and his savvy to outpoint Iliarde Santos en route to a unanimous decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). The flyweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It aired on FX ahead of the pay-per-view main card. Santos made clear early on that he had a big right and a willingness to use it, and throughout the three-round battle he did his best to find a home for it on McCall’s skull. But McCall was just too quick for his Brazilian opponent, bouncing in and out with crisp, effective combinations that ultimately won the day. McCall (12-4-1 MMA, 1-2-1 UFC) gets his first victory in four tries inside the octagon. Santos (27-8-1 MMA, 0-2 UFC) remains winless in the UFC, following up on a knockout loss in his debut with his decision defeat at the hands of McCall

It’s Business as Usual for Demetrious Johnson Heading into Second UFC Title Defense

Every fighter has his own unique way of preparing for a fight. Some scout their opponents and watch hours of video. Some bring in training partners to simulate their opponent’s style. UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson doesn’t do any of that. Johnson (17-2-1) was originally expected to face John Moraga on April 13, but a shoulder injury pushed back the bout to the UFC on Fox 8 fight card on July 27. Now healed, Johnson is ready for his second UFC title defense. “Recovery has gone great. Once I got cleared from a doctor to start training again, I started training,” Johnson said on a recent media conference call . “I’m feeling great; shoulder’s feeling 100-percent, and just ready to do work.” Moraga (13-1) is on a seven-fight winning streak and possesses solid wrestling and good boxing, but Johnson doesn’t feel that Moraga brings anything to the table that he hasn’t already faced. “My last fight I fought, I think he’s probably one of the guys in the division that has that one-strike knockout power where he drops guys, and you’ve seen him do it all the time. I’m speaking of John Dodson. John Moraga possesses great skills. He throws great combinations, but as far as me, when it comes to my training and preparing for fighters or fights, we don’t bring anybody in to emulate my opponent. We don’t go out and seek information on my opponent,” said Johnson. “We just train hard. I believe in my training partners and my coaching, and that’s what we’ve done and it hasn’t let us down yet.” Johnson doesn’t worry about what his opponent is going to do or what he does best. His only concern is becoming a better fighter.

Invicta FC 6 Results: Cris Cyborg Dominates Marloes Coenen, Captures Featherweight Championship

function not found Invicta FC returned to the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City for its sixth event, but its first on traditional satellite and cable TV pay-per-view. Company president Shannon Knapp couldn’t have picked a higher profile event to make the move to PPV, as a rematch three years in the making headlined the fight card. Cris “Cyborg” Justino and Marloes Coenen first met three-and-a-half years ago with Cyborg, then the Strikeforce 145-pound champion, winning by way of TKO stoppage in the third round. On Saturday night, they met with the inaugural Invicta FC featherweight championship on the line. The belt that was on the line was about the only difference from their first fight to this one. Much like their first fight, Cyborg was clearly still the much more aggressive, stronger, and more powerful fighter. Coenen opened strong, attacking with leg kicks and punch combinations, but it was evident from the first round that Cyborg was in full control of the fight

WINNIPEG – Canadian slugger Sean Pierson snuffed out Kenny Robertson’s wrestling attack for 10 minutes and then survived a third-round comeback bid to secure a majority-decision win. The welterweight bout was part of today’s UFC 161 event at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. It aired on FX after additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a pay-per-view main card. Robertson lunged forward for takedowns from the opening bell, but Pierson snuffed out the early shots and looked to counter with punches. Robertson’s continued efforts were briefly rewarded with a takedown, but Pierson quickly escaped back to his feet and continued to defend well with each subsequent shot. While Pierson suffered a small cut under his right eye during the striking exchanges, he ended the opening round with a few heavy combinations. Pierson opened up on the feet in the second frame, and Robertson’s aggressive takedown attack all but disappeared.
