(This story will appear in Thursday's edition of USA TODAY.) An amateur mixed martial arts fight set for Aug. 3 in Florida promises a first for its combatants – and perhaps the sport at large. Garrett Holeve and David Steffan , who suffer from Down syndrome and mild cerebral palsy respectively, are stepping into the cage for a full-speed fight at a King of the Casino event at the Seminole Immokalee Casino in Immokalee, Fla. Steffan, a former Special Olympian and current Paralympic Games competitor, is aware some will question whether their respective disabilities should rule out a fight, and he's ready to prove doubters wrong. "I think it's a great opportunity for both of us to show the world that we belong in there just like everyone else," he told USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

The UFC 162 headliner and longtime middleweight champion has decimated nearly every competitor since a loss to Ryo Chonan at PRIDE Shockwave 2004, and other than a DQ loss to Yushin Okami in 2006, he's been unbeatable. Yet, despite the champ's 16-fight UFC winning streak and his 10 consecutive title defenses, a growing number of fighters believe Chris Weidman (9-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will pull off the upset in the pay-per-view headliner of Saturday's UFC 162 event. Check out the above video as notables such as Georges St-Pierre, Daniel Cormier, Luke Rockhold, Gray Maynard and John Moraga suggest an upset is imminent.
UFC women’s middleweight champion Ronda Rousey says coaching season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter has been emotionally taxing and tiring, but the experience exceeded her expectations. Rousey (7-0) was named the first female coach of the popular reality show and was originally supposed to coach opposite Cat Zingano . Zingano earned the opportunity to coach The Ultimate Fighter and solidified her place as No. 1 contender to Rousey’s crown by defeating Miesha Tate in April. A knee injury, however, forced Zingano off the show and out of the anticipated title fight with Rousey. She was replaced by Rousey’s longtime rival, Tate. During the UFC 161: Henderson vs. Evans media day on June 14, UFC president Dana White said the filming of this season of the reality is going “bad.” “Miesha and Ronda hate each other,” said White. “It’s like literally crazy drama every day.” For Rousey, coaching has been more work than she anticipated. “It’s a lot more work than I thought it would be, and it’s a lot more emotionally taxing than I thought it would be. You care a lot about these kids. I just felt like any kind of heartbreak or triumph, whatever they’re going through, I share in it. It’s exhausting going through that over and over and over with every competitor,” she said during a Facebook chat sponsored by Metro PCS on Wednesday

A certain amount of backlash was, he figured, to be expected.
