At one point or another in every fighter’s career, they are paired up against a lesser known opponent where they have much more to lose than to gain. In the case of UFC bantamweight contender Urijah Faber (28-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC), that’s the exact situation he finds himself in against unheralded Brazilian Yuri Alcantara (28-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 26, which goes down Aug. 17 at Boston’s TD Garden. Currently ranked among the top 135-pound fighters in the world, Faber is on the cusp of a title shot after back-to-back submissions of Ivan Menjivar and Scott Jorgensen in February and April of this year. With an impressive resume under his belt, one would think “The California Kid” had intentions of facing the highest profile opponents possible in order to move up the ladder. Instead, Faber took a fight against someone looking to take what he’s got and doesn’t offer much in return. UFC welterweight Rory MacDonald knew he wanted to be a mixed martial artist the first time he saw footage of an early UFC event. He quickly began training at the age of 14 and a decade later is on the cusp of a UFC title shot. “I just fell in love. I started training. It was amazing,” MacDonald told UFC.com . “I was addicted. I was completely consumed in it. It was all I did like 24 hours a day was watch videos, train and try to learn as much as I could. “I pretty much knew instantly that this was going to be what I did with my life,” he added.

UFC heavyweight Fabricio Werdum is on the cusp of earning a UFC title shot. He takes on fellow Brazilian and MMA legend Antionio Rodrigo Nogueira in the UFC on Fuel TV 10 main event on Saturday in hopes of moving one step closer to a title fight. The two have fought once before in Japan under the Pride FC banner. Nogueira won the fight by unanimous decision, but this time Werdum feels things are going to be much different. “I think this fight will be a lot different than our last fight in 2006. I was a newcomer, but Nogueira was already a champion in the event. He was already very famous in MMA. I was purely a jiu-jitsu fighter,” Werdum told UFC.com .
