LONDON – It wasn’t pretty, but Britain’s Phil De Fries made good on his promise to defend his KSW heavyweight title on home soil at KSW 50, grinding out a split-decision victory after five grueling rounds at the SSE Arena, Wembley. De Fries and Brazilian challenger Luis Henrique spent the large majority of the opening three rounds seemingly locked together in an endless clinch as they battled for grappling supremacy in a largely uneventful first half of the contest. With both men clearly fatigued from three rounds of grapple-heavy action, the two heavyweights turned to their striking in the fourth, but neither man’s strikes carried the power needed to make the breakthrough. It meant the bout went to the fifth and final round as De Fries, looking marginally the fresher man, pushed the pace in the final five minutes as the contest went all the way to the final bell. And when the judges’ scores were tallied, it was De Fries who ran out the victor via split decision as the Brit secured his third successive title defense. The event features a trio of title fights, with the promotion’s heavyweight, light heavyweight and interim lightweight titles on the line. The night’s main event features a heavyweight title clash. England’s own Phil De Fries looks to make the second successful defense of the strap when he takes on Brazilian Luis Henrique . In the co-feature, Polish KSW light heavyweight champ Tomasz Narkun faces London-based Pole Przemyslaw Mysiala . Tomasz Narkun showed heart and a remarkable ability to withstand damage, but ultimately lacked the gas tank to match Phil De Fries ’ pressure in the main event of Saturday’s KSW 47. The result was a sometimes interesting, but ultimately one-sided 25-minute affair that ended with 50-44, 50-44 and 50-45 scorecards favoring De Fries. That meant De Fries got to keep KSW’s heavyweight title, while light heavyweight champion Narkun fell short in his attempt to achieve champ-champ status. KSW 47 streamed live on DAZN from Atlas Arena in Lodz, Poland. The decision added a fifth straight win to De Fries’ (17-6) record, which includes UFC and Bellator stints. He remains unbeaten at KSW, where he had his title-winning debut last April.

De Fries (16-6) retained his heavyweight title in his first defense with a second-round Americana against Karol Bedorf (15-4). Mamed Khalidov vacates middleweight title; Materla-Janikowski, Askham-Wojcik set for KSW 45 tourney

KSW middleweight champion Mamed Khalidov has vacated his title to set up a four-man tournament to crown a new champ. KSW officials announced the news today, saying in a press release that Khalidov (34-5-2) “does not want to hold the division up and that there is only one fight he is after at the moment.” That reference appears to be a hope for a rematch with light heavyweight champion Tomasz Narkun, whom Khalidov lost to in a superfight in March. A four-man tournament will start in October at KSW 45, the promotion announced.

Du Plessis (12-1) made his KSW debut a title-winning one as he dispatched defending welterweight champ Roberto Soldic (13-3) in the main event of tonight’s KSW 43 at Centennial Hall in Wroclaw, Poland. The entire card streamed on pay-per-view at KSWTV.com . Du Plessis has added a third belt to his collection, which contained titles in two different divisions at EFC. He’s made sure all of the eight wins on his current streak come via finish.

KSW 43 takes place April 14 at Centennial Hall in Wroclaw, Poland. It streams as an online pay-per-view in North America on KSWTV.com. Janikowski, a 28-year-old Polish fighter, won a bronze medal in wrestling at the 2012 Summer Olympics

I’m not sure exactly why, but I find myself looking forward to each new trailer Poland’s KSW puts out. I don’t speak Polish, so I don’t understand anything that’s said. I’ve traveled to Poland twice for UFC events, and like most countries I’ve visited, I did take time to learn how to order a frosty beverage: “piwo,” in this case. But KSW’s production team does a solid job of catching my interest, anyway, with fantastic visual effects. The latest effort is no exception. KSW 43 takes place April 14 at Centennial Hall in Warsaw.
