After splitting a pair of decisions against the man who has become his MMA nemesis, Stevie Ray wanted to put an exclamation point on a fight with Curt Warburton for once. With a second-round rear-naked choke finish, he did just that. Ray defended his lightweight title with the tapout win in the main event of Cage Warriors 73’s second main card on Saturday. The fight took place at Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England, and streamed live on MMAjunkie. Warburton clinched up right away in the first and looked to land elbows on the fence before going after a takedown. Ray tried to turn him around, but they stalemated in the tie-up

To the surprise of many, five-time UFC veteran John Maguire was upset by healthy underdog Saul Rogers after three rounds of closely contested action in the Cage Warriors 65 headliner. Saturday’s event, which streamed on MMAjunkie from The Helix in Dublin, saw the significantly younger and less experienced Rogers (8-1) hold his own and more against Maguire (19-7) to take a unanimous decision victory, and the most notable win of his young career. Maguire expected his winning streak and subsequent climb back to the UFC’s octagon to take another positive step forward against Rogers, but that obviously didn’t go as planned. The 24-year-old Rogers stayed away from the dangerous submissions of “The One” when he needed to and patiently waited for his moments to attack. With the loss, Maguire drops to a dismal 1-4 in his past five fights, while Rogers recorded his second consecutive victory under the Cage Warriors banner. Alloway edges Mason in Cage Warriors debut After seeing his UFC career fizzle due to consecutive losses, Ben Alloway (13-5) got back on track in his Cage Warriors debut with a decision victory over a game Jack Mason (26-13) in the co-main event.

Cage Warriors signs Marcin Lasota, Damien Rooney to flyweight roster for expected 2014 debuts

Cage Warriors Fighting Championship has bolstered its roster once again with the signing of a pair of flyweight fighters. Marcin Lasota and Damien Rooney have signed exclusive deals with the England-based promotion, each signing five-fight deals, promotion officials have announced. The two are expected to be booked for fights in the early part of Cage Warriors’ 2014 calendar. Lasota (7-0) comes to Cage Warriors from Poland as one of the top flyweight prospects in Europe
