UFC Fight Night 83 medical suspensions: Joe Riggs among 4 fighters out indefinitely

Chris Camozzi and Joe Riggs Eight fighters from Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 83 card in Pittsburgh have been issued medical suspensions following their bouts, including four who are shut down indefinitely. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission, which oversaw the card, released the suspensions to MMAjunkie. Perhaps most notable of the indefinite suspensions is veteran Joe Riggs (41-17 MMA, 5-7 UFC), who suffered a brutal TKO loss to Chris Camozzi (23-10 MMA, 8-7 UFC) on the main card. Camozzi drilled Riggs with a jab, then landed six vicious knees in the clinch to get the stoppage win. One of the knees broke Riggs’ right arm as he was trying to block them. Other indefinite suspensions were for promotional newcomer Kelly Faszholz (3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC), who was stopped by Lauren Murphy (9-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) with just five seconds left in the fight.

Filed under: Bellator , Featured , News , UFC So there I was on Sunday afternoon, laptop open, UFC Fight Pass fired up to watch two heavyweights, Shamil Abdurakhimov and Anthony Hamilton , as they did their thing on the UFC Fight Night 83 prelims, and it hits me: This is roughly a thousand times better than the other heavyweight fight I watched this same weekend, the one I’m still thinking about, the one that captured our imaginations then tortured them, slowly, with the brutal sluggishness of reality. You know the one. It’s the one where both participants had two sets of names and not one shred of cardio. Yeah, that one . But as soon as I made this mental comparison of Kevin “ Kimbo Slice ” Ferguson’s win over Dhafir “ Dada 5000 ” Harris at Bellator 149 to Abdurakhimov’s unanimous-decision victory over Hamilton, I realized the futility of it. Yes, one fight was exponentially better than the other, and in pretty much every athletic and technical sense

PITTSBURGH – Daniel Sarafian managed to get an arm up to block Oluwale Bamgbose ’s left high kick early in the first round. Unfortunately for Sarafian (9-6 MMA, 2-4 UFC), that wasn’t enough to save him from the power of Bamgbose (6-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) after he went tumbling to the mat with Bamgbose moving in to finish him off with right hands moments later, bringing an end to the bout at the 1:00 mark of Round 1. The middleweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 83 event at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of a main card on FOX Sports 1

Daniel Sarafian ‘not too worried’ about UFC Fight Night 83 opponent Oluwale Bamgbose

After a two-fight losing skid, Daniel Sarafian moved back to middleweight where he’ll look to run his winning streak to two when he faces Oluwale Bamgbose at UFC Fight Night 83. UFC Fight Night 83 takes place Feb. 21 at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh. The card will air on FOX Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass. Sarafian (9-5 MMA, 2-3 UFC) was originally set to face Sam Alvey (26-7 MMA, 3-2 UFC) on the card, but Bamgbose (5-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) stepped in as an injury replacement . Sarafian told MMAjunkie that he’s not worried about the change to the less experienced “Holy War Angel,” especially since he’s chomping at the bit to fight after being out of action since December 2014

Sam Alvey “Smile’n” Sam Alvey may have a slightly harder time living up to his nickname this holiday season. Alvey (26-7 MMA, 3-2 UFC) told the MMA Latest website a kick to the face during training left him with a broken jaw, which will force him out of his middleweight fight against Daniel Sarafian (9-5 MMA, 2-3 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 82 in February. UFC officials have not yet confirmed the injury, though with nearly two months before the event takes place, a replacement is likely to be sought to fight Sarafian on the card.
