In the past nearly seven years, Danillo Villefort has fought three times. It’s been more than two years since his most recent fight, and prior to that one he went nearly three years without stepping in the cage. (To help illustrate this a little, the photo above was taken in 2009 at UFC 101, and he’s averaged just one fight a year since then.) But given his life spent in the martial arts, he doesn’t think that’s going to matter Thursday.

Like the first two PFL cards of this inaugural regular season, this event, which features the first appearance of middleweight and welterweight combatants, is full of familiar names. None of those names is more familiar than that of Jake Shields , who headlines the event in a welterweight matchup against Ray Cooper III . In the co-main event, Abubakar Nurmagomedov looks to raise his profile in a 170-pound scrap against Pavel Kusch . Also appearing on the main card are former UFC fighters Rick Story , Eddie Gordon and John Howard .

The reborn PFL promotion is hitting the nation’s capital for the third event of its 2018 season. Officials today announced veteran welterweight and big-show champion Jake Shields (32-9-1) takes on Ray Cooper III (13-4) in the headliner. PFL 3 takes place July 5 at Charles E. Smith Center in Washington D.C.
