Stephen Thompson UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson (11-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) is making a habit of head-kick knockouts. He picked up his second in UFC competition when a spinning hook kick led to a first-round finish of Jake Ellenberger (30-10 MMA, 9-6 UFC) in The Ultimate Fighter 21 Finale’s main event on Sunday. Thompson weathered an early knockdown from “The Juggernaut” and then found his striking range. He knocked down Ellenberger with a spinning kick then followed up with the exact same technique to put an end to the matchup. First-round knockouts were a trend throughout the event, which took place at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena and aired on FOX Sports 1.

Ultimate Fighter 21 Finale medical suspensions: 15 fighters facing potential time off

Stephen Thompson The Nevada State Athletic Commission handed down the medical suspensions following the TUF 21 Finale and 15 fighters are looking at some time away from the game. The TUF 21 finale took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card aired on Fox Sports 1 after preliminary bouts on Fox Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. After his spinning kick knockout of Jake Ellenberger (30-10 MMA, 9-6 UFC), Stephen Thompson (11-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) could face 185 day suspension if he can’t get medical clearance on his right heel. Here is the full list of medical suspensions from the event: Stephen Thompson: Suspended 30 days with no contact for 21 days; additionally must have right heel injury cleared or suspended 185 days. Jake Ellenberger: Suspended 45 days for lacerations with no contact for 30 days

In the matchup that will determine which team receives a $300,000 prize and the “TUF” trophy, American Top Team’s Hayder Hassan (6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will take on Kamaru Usman (5-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) of the Blackzilians in a welterweight matchup. Hassan was the most successful fighter on “TUF 21.” He fought three times during the competition and came out on the winning end in each appearance. Usman fought twice and was dominant in both efforts.

CINCINNATI – Kyoji Horiguchi (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) hit Darrell Montague (13-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) with everything but a paternity suit, and still “The Mongoose” hung tough in a losing effort, as the Japanese fighter claimed a unanimous decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) after a dominating three-round performance. The flyweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 40 event at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati. It aired on FOX Sports 2 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of the main card on FOX Sports 1. Montague managed to keep it close for all of one round, but in the second, Horiguchi took over, pummeling his foe with lunging attacks and punishing body shots. Montague seemed on the verge of being finished several times in that second frame, and ended the round staggering back in the direction of his corner looking like he might collapse at any moment
