Filed under: Featured Videos , News , Videos , WSOF On Friday night, WSOF middleweight champion Dave Branch will look to claim a bit of history by becoming one of a select few men to ever simultaneously hold championship belts in two different weight classes. He nearly found himself without a single belt. In June 2014, Branch faced fellow veteran Jesse Taylor at WSOF 10, with the promotion’s inaugural middleweight belt on the line. It was Taylor who jumped out to the quick start, securing a guillotine choke in the opening 20 seconds of the contest. But Branch was able to outlast the hold before ending the fight shortly after with a Brabo choke of his own.

WSOF 23 set for September with Gaethje-Palomino rematch, Branch-Holder

Ronny Markes On the day of the weigh-ins, WSOF 20 headliner Ronny Markes is out of the main event. Markes (15-3) was set to meet Dave Branch (15-3) in the promotion’s light heavyweight tournament semifinal headliner on Friday. But a source close to the promotion told MMAjunkie Markes was in the hospital on Thursday, and Jesse McElligott (5-1) has been tapped to fight Branch in the main event. WSOF has yet to make an official announcement, but promotion vice president Ali Ali Abdelaziz confirmed the news to MMA Fighting . Dave Branch Dave Branch has impressed since moving to WSOF, winning the tournament to crown a middleweight champion, and then knocking out heavily favored Yushin Okami at WSOF 15 to retain his title. Branch (15-3) now looks to pull off a bigger shock at WSOF 20, where he moves up to light heavyweight to compete in a four-man tournament to crown a champion at 205 pounds. He isn’t stressing the risky move and higher weights, however, and says he’s a naturally big middleweight who puts on a considerable amount of weight when he’s not actively training to make the 185-pound limit.

Dave Branch There has been some shuffling in WSOF’s next two events. Ronny Markes (15-3) was set to meet Thiago Silva (16-3) at WSOF 19 in the promotion’s light heavyweight tournament. Instead, Markes will headline WSOF 20 opposite middleweight champion Dave Branch (15-3), who will move up 20 pounds in a quest for a second title. That means Silva will face fellow ex-UFC fighter Matt Hamill (11-5) at WSOF 19 in the other half of the four-man bracket.
