Phil Davis knows Saturday’s UFC 163 win over fellow light-heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida was a controversial one – even if the bout hadn’t taken place in his opponent’s home country, where Brazilians occasionally are gifted decisions. So when it comes to the type of close unanimous-decision victory he picked up at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena, Davis said he understands that it may be unpopular with many fans. “Fighting is an emotional thing,” he said after the pay-per-view co-headliner. “If I had lost this fight, I would be like, ‘I didn’t lose that fight, and they know it.’ That’s how it is. You put all you have into it. So everyone who was a Lyoto fan, I understand where you’re coming from

RIO DE JANEIRO – It wasn’t pretty, but Francimar Barroso came in on short notice and got the job done against Ednaldo Oliveira, taking home a unanimous decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) after three rounds. The light heavyweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It streamed on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FX and the pay-per-view main card. Barroso, a late replacement for Oliveira’s original opponent, Robert Drysdale, had to exercise caution when dealing with the much taller fighter’s reach early on.

Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire believes judging favors Americans, cost him titles

Patricio Freire has two losses in his career – both by split decision, and both in Bellator title fights. Split decisions, by nature, are more often than not going to be controversial with each fighter typically believing he did enough to get the nod. In “Pitbull” Freire’s case, he believes in his two losses, he not only did enough, but that being Brazilian didn’t work in his favor. “Both losses were against world champions, and both by split decision,” Freire told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “I believe if the judges were Brazilian, I would have been awarded the win in both occasions. The U.K. invaded the U.S. at Global Warrior Challenge’s “British Invasion” on Saturday night at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. It was an entertaining night of fights that saw everything from slick submissions, to comeback wins, to vicious knockouts, to hard-fought decisions. In the end, it was a successful night for the U.K. competitors, as they took the majority of the bouts in the country vs. country format.

WINNIPEG – Canadian slugger Sean Pierson snuffed out Kenny Robertson’s wrestling attack for 10 minutes and then survived a third-round comeback bid to secure a majority-decision win. The welterweight bout was part of today’s UFC 161 event at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. It aired on FX after additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a pay-per-view main card. Robertson lunged forward for takedowns from the opening bell, but Pierson snuffed out the early shots and looked to counter with punches. Robertson’s continued efforts were briefly rewarded with a takedown, but Pierson quickly escaped back to his feet and continued to defend well with each subsequent shot. While Pierson suffered a small cut under his right eye during the striking exchanges, he ended the opening round with a few heavy combinations. Pierson opened up on the feet in the second frame, and Robertson’s aggressive takedown attack all but disappeared.

Leave it to Brazil to set a record for submissions. It’s completely appropriate. Saturday’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 card set a new UFC record with eight submissions in 12 fights – and tied a promotional record with 10 total stoppages. The show took place in, of course, the cradle of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. UFC on FUEL TV 10 took place at Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. The main card aired on FUEL TV following prelims on Facebook. Apart from the eight submissions, there were a pair of knockouts and just two decisions. But it was the tapouts that everyone was talking about
