In the middleweight main event, champion Rafael Carvalho (14-1 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) got the closure he was looking for when he knocked Melvin Manhoef (30-14-1 MMA, 2-3 BMMA) out cold with a fourth-round head kick to defend his title for the second time in what was a rematch of a controversial split-decision win at Bellator 155 in May 2016. Similar to the first fight, the showdown between the two strikers lacked signifiant action early. Carvalho turned the tide, though, and when he found an opening to land a big shot, he made the most of it.

Carvalho (14-1 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) scored a fourth-round knockout of Manhoef (30-13-1 MMA, 2-3 BMMA) in the main event of Saturday’s Bellator 176 event, which took place at Pala Alpitour in Turin, Italy. Additional featured matchups included Anastasia Yankova (5-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) picking up a decision win over game 18-year-old Elina Kallionidou (5-2 MMA, 0-2 BMMA), lightweight Valeriu Mircea (15-4 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) picking up a decision over Djamil Chan (12-5 MMA, 1-2 BMMA), and undefeated lightweight Mihail Nica (6-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) keeping his unblemished record by picking a quick submission over late replacement Samba Coulibaly (11-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA). Bellator 176 sends promotion back to Italy on April 8 for MMA/kickboxing event

Bellator is heading back across the pond for another dual MMA/kickboxing event in Italy. Bellator 176 is set for April 8 in Turin, the promotion today announced. The event will take place at the Pala Alpitour in Turin. The main card will air on Spike, though it was not yet announced if the broadcast will be on a tape-delay basis the way past Bellator events have been in Europe. It’s been less than a year since Bellator’s first international show took place in Turin.

Takedowns were the deciding factor in Cheick Kongo ’s victory over Tony Johnson in Friday’s Bellator 161 heavyweight headliner, which aired on Spike at H-E-P Arena in Cedar Park, Texas. The style matchup between Kongo (25-10-2 MMA, 7-2 BMMA) and Johnson (10-3 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) had the potential to result in an underwhelming affair. That’s essentially how it played out, because the three-round heavyweight fight was clinch and takedown heavy, with Kongo getting the more impactful offense to earn a majority decision by scorecards of 28-28, 29-28 and 29-28. The first round was light in action, but Kongo landed a takedown in the final minute that put him ahead. He quickly advanced to mount and tried to pound his way to what was the closest thing to a stoppage in the contest, but he didn’t have enough time to get the job done before time ran out. The weigh-ins for Friday’s Bellator 161 are in the books and all the fights are now official, though not without one small complication. Bellator 161 takes place at H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, Texas. Spike carries the televised main card following prelims on MMAjunkie. In the main event, UFC veteran Cheick Kongo (24-10-2 MMA, 6-2 BMMA) meets Tony Johnson (10-2 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) in a heavyweight clash. Kongo tipped the scales at 237.5 pounds to Johnson’s 264.
