Another two fighters punched their ticket to the UFC, including light heavyweight Mike Rodriguez (9-2), who scored a devastating knockout victory over Jamelle Jones (7-5). The contest served as the final bout of Tuesday’s Dana White’s Contender Series 5 event, which took place in las Vegas at The Ultimate Fighter Gym and streamed live on UFC Fight Pass. The two were cautious to start, feeling each other out on the feet while seeking angles. Jones was forced to move in and out of range against a taller foe, eventually shooting for a takedown that didn’t materialize. Once confident on his feet, Rodriguez launched a flying knee that landed flush, sending Jones to the floor. A few more punches on the floor sealed the result, though the finish was never in question.

Blagoy Ivanov ’s reign over WSOF’s heavyweight division continued on Saturday night in a big way. Ivanov (15-1) had no trouble with challenger Shawn Jordan (19-8) in the WSOF 35 main event to retain his heavyweight title with a first-round TKO that came at the 1:43 mark of the fight. WSOF 35 took place at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. The main card, which featured three title fights, aired on NBCSN following prelims on MMAjunkie. MMAjunkie today obtained the list of disclosed paydays for WSOF 22 from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The fight took place at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino and aired on NBCSN following prelims on MMAjunkie. Jake Shields’ eyes after WSOF 22 Rousimar Palhares walked away from his fight with Jake Shields with just 30 percent of his potential pay and could face disciplinary action following his controversial submission win at this past Saturday’s WSOF 22 event. Palhares (18-6) earned just $23,975 of a possible $80,000 purse for his second WSOF title defense after the Nevada State Athletic Commission elected to withhold his $40,000 win purse pending a review of the bout, which ended in the third round when Shields tapped to a kimura. An additional $16,000 was also subtracted from the Brazilian Palhares for taxes and the commission’s new anti-doping statutes, which require that 10 percent of a fighter’s purse is withheld pending the results of drug testing, NSAC Executive Director Bob Bennett told MMAjunkie on Monday. Bennett added Palhares was tested pre-fight via urine for banned substances and the results should be available shortly. (Shields and co-main event fighters Marlon Moraes and Sheymon Moraes also had 10 percent of their purses withheld.) Controversy arose when Palhares appeared to torque Shields’(31-8-1) arm well after being instructed to stop by referee Steve Mazzagatti. He was also repeatedly warned for eye-gouging in the second round.

Donavon Frelow When Donavon Frelow was about 12, he had a Sega Dreamcast. One of the games he and his younger brother liked to play, he said, was an MMA game featuring fighters from PRIDE Fighting Championships. His favorite? Wanderlei Silva. So it was amazing to him, more than 10 years later and after a move from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, when he found himself sitting at a gym where Silva was supposed to have trained. “When I heard about it,” Frelow told MMAjunkie about the gym, “I was like a kid who found out there was Disneyland in Vegas.” The former star football player was even more astonished when someone came to sit next to him as he watched others go through drills and training in his first time at the gym.

Jimmy Spicuzza Next month’s WSOF 22 event has lost a title fight and gained a new main-card bout. On Wednesday, WSOF officials announced Magomed Bibulatov (9-0) has been forced out of a fight with Donavon Frelow (4-0) for undisclosed reasons. Frelow is likely to be moved to the preliminary card, though the inaugural flyweight title will no longer be on the line. Officials also announced the addition of a bout between lightweights Jimmy Spicuzza (6-2) and Islam Mamedov (11-1) to the main card. WSOF 22 takes place Aug. 1, the same night as UFC 190, at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
