The official end of Bellator MMA (originally known as Bellator Fighting Championships from its debut in 2009 through 2012), coupled with the constant news of former Bellator fighters expressing their discontent with the PFL, has definitely brought on a wave of nostalgia for me – perhaps a bigger wave than I would have imagined. I’m extremely grateful for my time as a Bellator play-by-play commentator, which spanned 127 events and (somehow) exactly 1,250 fights from 2010 through 2015. One to never keep track of things like this, I went back and counted for this article. Even though I had already commentated Pride and M1 Global, when Bellator founder Bjorn Rebney hired me in November 2009, he gave me a gig that fully shifted me from being a soccer commentator to a fight commentator – which is exactly what I wanted, and for which I will always be extremely grateful. The announcement of Patricio Freire – arguably the greatest fighter in Bellator history and inarguably the fighter with the best-ever Bellator career – signing with the UFC definitely created a conversation about which other Bellator alumni could soon make this move. This also has opened up discussions about which now-retired Bellator greats could have gone to the UFC had they been given the chance, or seized the opportunity presented.

The fledgling Global Fight League continued to get its business in order Thursday with several important announcements. Last month, the GFL, headed by co-founder Darren Owen, announced plans for its official launch this year , with the concept of team-based mixed martial arts at the forefront. The GFL will feature six teams from six cities competing in a league format that includes playoffs

Former Bellator champ Douglas Lima books first assignment since extending contract

For a while, it seemed Douglas Lima ’s future in Bellator was up in the air, but he’s now on a new deal and has a fight on the books. Lima (33-11) will face Aaron Jeffery (14-5) at the Bellator Champions Series event Sept. 7 at Pechanga Arena in San Diego, a promotion official confirmed to MMA Junkie after an initial report by MMA Fighting . The fight will mark Lima’s first in 16 months as he was in limbo during the early stages of the PFL-Bellator merger.

PFL announces former Bellator champion Douglas Lima re-signed to new contract

With PFL recently releasing one former Bellator champion, the promotion has decided to lock up another. On Tuesday, the PFL announced that Douglas Lima has signed an “exclusive, multiyear, new agreement.” No terms of the deal were released. “We are excited to announce he will fight this fall 2024,” the PFL added in its statement. Bellator hosted its lone July event on Friday with Bellator 283 , which went down at Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash. A new top welterweight contender emerged in the main event, with Jason Jackson (16-4 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) scoring a unanimous decision win over multi-time Bellator champion Douglas Lima (32-11 MMA, 14-7 BMMA) to strengthen his own case for a crack at gold.
