Ricci connected a vicious elbow to Ribas’ face in the second round of their strawweight bout on July 26. The strike displaced a metal plate that was inserted in the area in 2023, when Ribas suffered a mid-fight orbital bone fracture against Maycee Barber .

RIO DE JANEIRO – Amanda Nunes apparently had little interest in finding out what it would feel like to see Round 2 in her UFC debut. Against Sheila Gaff, the Brazilian bantamweight started fast and ended fast, earning a TKO stoppage via elbow strikes at 2:08 of the first round. The women’s bantamweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It aired on FX ahead of the pay-per-view main card. Nunes and Gaff signaled right away that theirs was not the kind of business that would likely take long to resolve. The two women met in the center of the cage and traded heavy leather in the opening seconds, though it was Gaff who initially tried to get the action to the mat. Nunes shrugged off an early attempt at a rear-naked choke, then muscled Gaff back to the floor moments later before unloading with a barrage of elbow strikes from inside the German’s guard that forced referee Herb Dean to call a stop to the bout.

Thomson, in Las Vegas for UFC 162, spoke to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) on Wednesday about his recovery from minor knee and elbow surgeries, and his current plan for a September or October return to the cage. “I’m just begging and pleading to Joe Silva and Dana White to give me the Pettis fight,” he said. Thomson (20-5 MMA, 3-1 UFC), a longtime Strikeforce fighter, returned to the UFC in April and upset Nate Diaz via TKO at UFC on FOX 7. It marked the first’s knockout loss of Diaz’s career. There has been a minor war of words brewing between UFC heavyweights Stefan Struve and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira , leading many to believe that a fight was imminent. They won’t be fighting anytime soon, however, as Big Nog’s manager, Ed Soares, recently told MMAFighting.com that the former UFC and Pride champion wouldn’t return to training for at least three months following surgery. Nogueira had to undergo surgery after an MRI revealed extensive ligament damage in his left elbow stemming from an armbar submission loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC on Fuel TV 10 on June 8 in Brazil. Nogueira also required surgery following a Kimura submission loss to Frank Mir in late 2011. That surgery required 16 screws in his humerus, but Nogueira still managed to return to the Octagon 10 months later to defeat Dave Herman.

Scott Holtzman seized the night at XFC 24 on Friday night at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., capturing the vacant XFC lightweight title. Holtzman had initially planned on facing XFC champion Nick Newell for the belt on Friday night, but that was before Newell declined the fight, was stripped of his title, and eventually exited the promotion, signing with the World Series of Fighting. With Newell out of the picture, the XFC matched Holtzman up with John Mahlow for the vacant title, and Holtzman took full advantage of the moment. Mahlow scored an early takedown, but as the fight wore on, Holtzman ramped up his takedown defense and a blistering offensive attack. He cut Mahlow with a spinning elbow, then took him down and ground and pounded in the opening round. Holtzman kept the attack going in round two, grounding Mahlow again. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to Undergo Surgery Following Armbar Loss to Fabricio Werdum

Former Pride and interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is once again going under the knife. Nogueira reportedly suffered ligament damage resulting from an armbar submission loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC on Fuel TV 10. Tatame.com confirmed and reported the injury and pending surgery. An MRI revealed extensive ligament damage in his left elbow that will require Nogueira to undergo surgery on Friday.
