RIO DE JANEIRO – Amanda Nunes apparently had little interest in finding out what it would feel like to see Round 2 in her UFC debut. Against Sheila Gaff, the Brazilian bantamweight started fast and ended fast, earning a TKO stoppage via elbow strikes at 2:08 of the first round. The women’s bantamweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It aired on FX ahead of the pay-per-view main card. Nunes and Gaff signaled right away that theirs was not the kind of business that would likely take long to resolve. The two women met in the center of the cage and traded heavy leather in the opening seconds, though it was Gaff who initially tried to get the action to the mat. Nunes shrugged off an early attempt at a rear-naked choke, then muscled Gaff back to the floor moments later before unloading with a barrage of elbow strikes from inside the German’s guard that forced referee Herb Dean to call a stop to the bout.

SEATTLE – Ground-and-pound was the name of the game for Liz Carmouche on the way to her first UFC victory. The recent women’s bantamweight title challenger pounced out newcomer Jessica Andrade with a vicious barrage of elbows and fists on the ground for a second-round TKO win. The women’s bantamweight bout opened up the main card of today’s UFC on FOX 8 event at KeyArena in Seattle. It aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook. Carmouche opened with an early kick, but Andrade fired right back and the two tied up along the fence.

Frankie Edgar: “I Will Defeat Charles Oliveira”

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will compete in a non-title fight for the first time since 2009 when he faces Charles Oliveira on the UFC 162 main card on Saturday. He believes fighting a three-rounder instead of five rounds could force a welcome change his approach. “It’s a blessing in disguise, I feel like, coming back to a three-round fight. It’s going to make me get out of the gun early and make sure, first round, I’m in his face and I’m in the rhythm that I like to be in fourth and fifth (round),” Edgar told UFC.com . Oliveira (16-3, 1 no contest) has logged submissions in all four of his UFC fights, earning Submission of the Night honors twice. “He’s tough. He’s dangerous. Probably the tallest guy I may have ever fought. He’s got pretty good Muay Thai. He mixes it up well with kicks, knees, elbows. He’s got a slick submission game. He’s willing to go from broke to go for submissions,” said Edgar about his opponent. Edgar plans to utilize his striking against Oliveira and believes his takedown defense will be a key factor

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva puts his 17-fight winning streak and title on the line at UFC 162 on July 6 against Chris Weidman . Despite many people saying Weidman has the tools to challenge the champ, Silva says he is ready. “The fight is the fight. I’m ready for the fight for a long time,” Silva told UFC.com . “I will be prepared to fight.” In his seven-year title reign, Silva has beaten opponents by every way imaginable: front kicks, punches, knees, elbows, chokes. Twenty of his 33 wins have been by knockout. The champion attributes his success to his training. “I believe you train 100-percent, your results will be 100-percent,” he said. “Everything that I do in the fight are things that I’ve trained.” The undefeated Weidman (9-0) is an accomplished grappler, while Silva is the most accurate precision striker the sport has ever seen. It’s a classic contrasting styles match-up and Silva believes the fighter that is able to combine all aspects of fighting will emerge the winner. “Weidman got good jiu-jitsu and great wrestling. But he needs work with his stand-up,” said Silva. “Wrestling is not my best strength. And I need to work on my wrestling. UFC on FUEL TV 10 results: Caio Magalhaes rallies to submit Karlos Vemola

FORTALEZA, BRAZIL – What started off as a bad night for Caio Magalhaes ended in triumph before a raucous hometown crowd on Saturday, as the Brazilian bounced back from a brutal first round to defeat Karlos Vemola via rear-naked choke submission at 2:49 of the second frame. The middleweight bout was part of today’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 event at Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. It streamed on Facebook ahead of a main card on FUEL TV. Right away it seemed as though Magalhaes might be in trouble, as Vemola spent almost the entire first round shrugging off one submission attempt after another while jackhammering Magalhaes with punches and elbows from the top. Magalhaes returned to his corner bloodied and battered after the first five minutes, but came out strong in the second and quickly turned the tables on Vemola, planting him on his back and eventually locking up the choke. With the win, Magalhaes (6-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) bounces back after his first career loss to Buddy Roberts in his UFC debut this past June. Vemola (9-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) has now dropped two in a row dating back to his submission loss to Francis Carmont this past July.
