Carla Esparza Newly crowned UFC women’s strawweight champion Carla Esparza has a date and opponent for her first title defense . The two-time All-American wrestler is set to face off against Polish kickboxing champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in the co-main event of “UFC 185: Pettis vs. dos Anjos,” which takes place on March 14 in Dallas. Esparza (10-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) became the inaugural Invicta FC strawweight champion in her third bout for the promotion in early 2013, but after a planned title fight against Claudia Gadelha was scrapped on three occasions, Esparza joined 15 other women on “The Ultimate Fighter 20.” She defeated three straight opponents to advance on to the championship final, which culminated at the TUF 20 Finale this past month. In one of her most impressive performances to date, Esparza submitted Rose Namajunas to become the first UFC women’s 115-pound champion, but she now faces a tough test in her upcoming title defense. LAS VEGAS – In a battle of two UFC veterans, David Branch (14-3) submitted Jesse Taylor (27-10) in the opening round and claimed WSOF’s inaugural middleweight title. The bout served as the headlining matchup of Saturday’s “WSOF 10: Branch vs. Taylor” event, which took place at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and aired live on NBC Sports Network. It was Taylor who looked to finish the fight early, dropping to his back and looking to squeeze a guillotine. But Branch kept his arm in the hold and prevented his opponent from locking up the hold

Referees Herb Dean and Steve Mazzagatti to officiate Saturday’s WSOF 10 title fights

Herb Dean and Steve Mazzagatti will officiate the trio of title fights at Saturday’s WSOF 10 event. During Tuesday’s Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing, the fights were assigned to the veteran referees. WSOF 10 takes place at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The main card airs on NBC Sports Network following prelims on MMAjunkie. Dean will oversee the headlining title fight between David Branch (13-3) and Jesse Taylor (27-9), who fight for the organization’s inaugural middleweight belt.

The UFC has a busy schedule of events planned for the remainder of 2014 as it prepares for the launch of the newly formed UFC women’s strawweight division, but the female bantamweights have not been forgotten. Three 135-pound women’s bouts, including an intriguing matchup between Germaine de Randamie and Milana Dudieva at UFC 174, were recently confirmed for the UFC’s summer schedule. The event takes place June 14 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Multi-time muay Thai world champion de Randamie (4-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is no stranger to big fights, and the standout striker has already battled some of MMA’s top female talent during her seven-fight career. Following a 2-1 run in Strikeforce, de Randamie made her octagon debut this past July and eked out a split-decision win over veteran Julie Kedzie at UFC on FOX 8. De Randamie returned to action in November and faced off against Amanda Nunes, but the Brazilian rising star’s ground and pound propelled her to a first-round TKO win.

With their respective opponents sidelined due to injuries, former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion Sarah Kaufman and Brazilian knockout artist Amanda Nunes find themselves on opposing sides of the octagon at The Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale. The event is set for April 16 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Seeking her first UFC victory, Kaufman (16-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) was originally slated to face off against submission specialist Shayna Baszler on the TUF Nations Finale card. The pair first met under the Strikeforce banner in June 2009 when Kaufman earned a close decision victory. However, a training injury forced Baszler to withdraw from the planned rematch this week, leaving Kaufman without an opponent for the second time in her brief UFC career.
