The contest served as the final preliminary bout of Saturday’s Bellator 120 event at Landers Center in Southaven, Miss. The fights aired on Spike TV following additional prelims on Spike.com and ahead of the main card on pay-per-view. Kongo was patient to open, and Smith walked forward but was careful not to overcommit to an attack

The promotion on Friday announced that Bellator 120 will feature an opening main-card fight between  Michael Page (5-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) and  Ricky Rainey (7-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), plus prelim fights between  Blagoi Ivanov (11-0 MMA, 6-0 BMMA) and  Alexander Volkov (21-4 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) in the Season 10 heavyweight tournament final and  Marcin Held (18-3 MMA, 7-2 BMMA) vs.  Patricky Freire (13-5 MMA, 6-4 BMMA) in the lightweight tournament final. In addition, the prelims will feature a featherweight bout between  Mike Richman (16-4 MMA, 5-3 BMMA) and  Goiti Yamauchi (16-2 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) and a heavyweight fight between  Cheick Kongo (20-9-2 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) and  Eric Smith (6-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA). Bellator 120 takes place May 17 at Landers Center in Southaven, Miss., just outside of Memphis
