The 24-year-old has been able to move from remote northern Brazil to the United States. When Guerreiro (20-3 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) faces John Teixeira (17-1-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) tonight at Bellator 136 at Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif., he does so with the goal of improving his family’s position even more after nearly a year lost in the shuffle of Bellator MMA’s changing ownership. “By the time I face John Teixeira, I’ll be in America for an entire year,” Guerreiro told MMAjunkie. “I feel very happy to give a better quality of life to my wife and son. SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – After a bit of a scare in the opening round of his bout with Eric Smith (6-2 MMA, 0-1 BMMA), heavyweight favorite Cheick Kongo (21-9-2 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) dominated the second frame to score a TKO win. The contest served as the final preliminary bout of Saturday’s Bellator 120 event at Landers Center in Southaven, Miss. The fights aired on Spike TV following additional prelims on Spike.com and ahead of the main card on pay-per-view. Kongo was patient to open, and Smith walked forward but was careful not to overcommit to an attack

Fabricio Guerreiro bringing judo, Team Alpha Male training to Bellator 120

Fabricio Guerreiro picked up some new tricks during his recent training at Team Alpha Male, but tonight at Bellator 120, he expects judo will still be his primary weapon. Guerreiro (19-3 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) meets fellow featherweight Shahbulat Shamhalaev (12-1-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) in a Spike TV-televised preliminary-card bout, which precedes the night’s pay-per-view main card at Landers Center in Southaven, Miss. Guerreiro most recently competed in October, when he dropped a decision to Patricio Freire in the semifinals of Bellator’s Season 9 featherweight tournament. Shamhalaev, meanwhile, hasn’t fought since April 2013, when he had a failed bid at 145-pound champion’s Pat Curran’s belt. Both fighters could be dealing with ring rust, but the 23-year-old Guerreiro believes he’s a better fighter than he was just seven months ago, thanks in part to his work at California’s Team Alpha Male gym. “I’m training with everyone here and putting together my strategy,” he told MMAjunkie.

Freire vs. Held scratched, Bellator 120 adds Guerreiro vs. Shamhalaev

A hand injury has forced Brazilian Patricky “Pitbull” Freire out of a planned tournament final bout with Marcin Held , and the bout has been pulled from next week’s Bellator 120 event. In its place, Bellator MMA officials has added a featherweight bout between Fabricio Guerreiro (19-3 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) and Shahbulat Shamhalaev (12-1-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA). “It’s unfortunate to lose a fight like Patricky vs. Held on May 17, but we were able to reschedule the Shahbulat-Fabricio fight which will be a great fight,” Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney stated. “Patricky will take some time to heal, and then we’ll look to reschedule his tournament championship fight with Marcin, who is one of the top young rising stars in our sport.” The new matchup takes place on the Spike TV-broadcast preliminary card of “Bellator 120: Alvarez vs.

Friday’s Bellator 119 card loses headliner (and featured prelim) five days out

Friday’s Bellator 119 event has taken a one-two punch right to the kisser. Just five days before the event is set to air on Spike TV, the lineup has lost both its headliner and its featured preliminary-card bout. Bellator officials today announced the main event, which also serves as a middleweight tournament final, has been postponed. Brett Cooper (20-9 MMA, 7-4 BMMA) has suffered a back injury, forcing a delay to his fight with fellow finalist Brandon Halsey (6-0 MMA, 4-0 BMMA). The winner of the bout, which will be rescheduled for later this year, eventually will face reigning 185-pound champion Alexander Shlemenko. Additionally, visa issues have forced Fabricio Guerreiro (19-3 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) off the card.
