Despite the individual nature of fighting, MMA remains a team sport. Bellator 97′s Rafael Silva has seen both the positives and negatives of the fact. Silva (19-3 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) makes his Bellator debut tonight in a bantamweight-semifinal tournament fight against Rodrigo Lima (11-1 MMA, 1-1 BMMA), which streams on Spike.com ahead of the Spike TV-televised main card at Santa Ana Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. It marks the U.S. debut of Silva, who carries an 11-fight win streak that the Brazilian built in his home country. And though the veteran 135-pounder makes a living fighting and teaching MMA, “Morcego” hopes this fight can secure some financial help from sponsors. That, he said, has been harder to do lately. Paul Daley, Maiquel Falcao released by Bellator MMA

Paul Daley and Maiquel Falcao are no longer under contract with Bellator. Today, the promotion suddenly announced a decision to release the welterweight and middleweight fighters, who’ve both landed in trouble with the law after reported assaults. Bellator rep Anthony Mazzuca told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the promotion will not retain matching rights and the fighters are free to compete for any other promotion. “We examine each situation on a case-by-case basis, and in these two instances, the violent nature of both situations has led to our decision to release both fighters from the organization,” he said. Mazzuca cited Falcao’s involvement in a brawl in his native Brazil and Daley’s conviction on a charge of assaulting and obstructing a police officer, which contradicts public statements given by the fighter about the incident this past December in the United Kingdom. Daley manager Wad Alameddine said he received word earlier today that Daley had been cut, but was unable to reach his client. “I’m definitely disappointed,” he said. In June, Daley told Bleacher Report that the case had been thrown out for “lack of evidence and contradicting witness accounts.” Alameddine, however, confirmed that the welterweight had, in fact, been convicted of assault and fined for the charge

UFC President Dana White has seen the gruesome video that shows MMA fighters Kaue Mena (7-0) and Maiquel Falcao (31-6 MMA, 3-1 BFC) savagely beaten, and he’s as disgusted as anyone at the brutal attack. But he admits he’s not completely surprised that Falcao appears to be at least partially responsible for igniting the incident. “This whole situation is really unfortunate,” White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “All you can do is just hope Kaue Mena’s health continues to improve. But I have to be honest and tell you it really bugs me that it’s being reported that Maiquel Falcao is a UFC fighter. We let him go back in 2011 for the same reason. We found out he had a charge on his record for hitting a woman, and we cut him because of that.” According to a news report from a Brazilian TV station Band Santa Catarina, Falcao and Mena were at a gas station this past Saturday when Falcao apparently got into an argument with a pair of women, one of whom he pushed away. A group of men then came into the store and began fighting with the two, and the violence spilled outside.

Following a public brawl caught on tape, Bellator middleweight Maiquel Falcao (31-6 MMA, 3-1 BFC) and undefeated featherweight Kaue Mena (7-0) have been kicked off their MMA team. Marcelo Brigadeiro, who heads the Renovacao Fight Team in Balneario Camboriu, Santa Catarina, Brazil, today issued a statement that said the fighters’ behavior was not compatible with his team’s philosophy. Falcao appears to have initiated a brawl at a gas station near the team’s home by shoving a female, which prompted several men to brawl with he and Mena both inside and outside the establishment. Both were hit with a wooden board, and Mena was badly beaten while unconscious, according to a Brazilian news report that contained surveillance footage of the incident. Both were taken to Hospital do Coracao in Balneario Camboriu, as previously reported. Falcao was released, but according to Brigadeiro, featherweight Mena remains in a coma

Undefeated MMA fighter Kaue Mena (7-0) remains in a Brazilian hospital after an altercation that involved Bellator fighter Maiquel Falcao (31-6 MMA, 3-1 BFC) turned violent. Falcao’s wife, Danielle, wrote on Facebook that Mena’s condition is improving after surgery, though “his condition remains very grave.” She asked friends and loved ones for their prayers. “Great news,” she wrote in her native Portuguese. “Our brother Kaue has shown improvements. We are following his recovery. Glory be to God. We will continue praying in earnest.” Falcao and Mena were at a gas station this past Saturday when Falcao apparently got into an argument with a pair of women, one of whom he pushed away, according to a news report from a Brazilian TV station Band Santa Catarina.
