Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo May Have Suffered Broken Foot in UFC 163 Title Fight

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo defended his 145-pound title at UFC 163 on Saturday by defeating “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung , but may have suffered a broken foot early in the title bout. “When the fight started the first thing I did, I kicked him and he put his knee, so the first time I kicked him I don’t know if I broke my foot. I don’t know, it is very swollen,” said Aldo during the post-fight press conference. “He knew that I was going be giving him low kicks, so the first combination I think he left his knee there. I kicked straight at his knee. I don’t know if I broke my foot. It’s very swollen. I can barely walk properly,” he added. The titleholder attended the post-fight press conference, but departed early to go to the hospital and have his foot evaluated. Kicks at a high volume are typical when Aldo fights, but he had to make adjustments early on to deal with the foot injury. “I had to change my strategy. I had to totally change it,” he said. “We tried to control it in a different way. Everyone already expects for me to be kicking low kicks, but I’m a complete fighter. I always try to practice everything,” said the champion. “Whereever the fight goes, I always try to use all my weapons. I don’t only have one weapon. SEATTLE – Miesha Tate must first see whether she’s able to avenge a gruesome submission loss to now-UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey , who took her Strikeforce belt and set the stage for for her rise to stardom. After replacing the injured Cat Zingano , she’ll get a chance to do that when the two rematch at UFC 168 on Dec. 28 in Las Vegas, which follows a stint serving as opposing coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter 18.” But fans also are interested to know what will happen next if she’s able to pull off the upset. Should Rousey win, most would say that a superfight with newly minted Invicta FC featherweight champ Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino (12-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) would be closer than ever. The logical follow-up to that possibility, which was broached on Friday during a Q&A session with Tate at KeyArena in Seattle, is what would happen if Tate (13-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is able to pull off the upset. Rousey is a huge favorite to win the fight, with early lines making her an 11-1 favorite. But Tate said she’s calling in a decorated judo player to help prepare her for the grappling skills of “Rowdy.” Besides, upsets are all too common when people start to make fights before they could potentially happen.

So I’ve got to get it done, and then I’ll look to the future. “Of course, I really want to challenge for the Cage Warriors title, and some day, I want to get to the UFC.” But that’s the goal of pretty much everyone in Cage Warriors, if you ask them. The promotion increasingly is taking the role of a springboard to the Las Vegas-based fight organization, as the signing of featherweight champ Conor McGregor attests. A four-fight win streak such as the one Mason currently owns is just the kind of leverage needed to get into the octagon.

A title fight between featherweight champion Jim Alers (10-1) and challenger Martin Svensson (12-3) has been added to September’s Cage Warriors 59 event, officials today announced. An additional featherweight bout between Dave Hill (10-3) and Brian Moore (7-2) also has been scheduled. Cage Warriors 59 takes place Sept. 14 at Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales. The main card streams on MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) following prelims on Facebook.

ONE FC’s Bibiano Fernandes: Back to 145? Maybe. But flyweight? ‘No way.’

Bibiano Fernandes has felt right at home at featherweight in the past. And he feels plenty comfortable now as a bantamweight. Fernandes (14-3) this past month won ONE FC’s interim bantamweight title with a five-round unanimous decision victory over Koetsu Okazaki (8-3-1) at ONE FC 9 in the Philippines. He was the DREAM featherweight champ in 2009-2010, then dropped down to bantamweight after losing the belt to Hiroyuki Takaya . And he quickly proceeded to win that promotion’s title at 135. Now he awaits word on when he might fight current ONE FC champ Soo Chul Kim , who has been sidelined with a shoulder injury. In the meantime, would Fernandes ever consider going back up to featherweight

Bellator 99 takes place at Mohegan Sun Arena, hosts Warren vs. Kirk

Bellator MMA’s Season 9 debut will take place Sept. 7 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The first official bout for the event sees former Bellator featherweight champ Joe Warren (8-3 MMA, 6-2 BFC) meet Nick Kirk (10-2 MMA, 0-2 BFC) in a bantamweight tourney contest. Bellator officials announced the details of the event, Bellator 99, on Wednesday night’s Bellator 96 broadcast. As with all of the promotion’s Season 9 events, the Bellator 99 main card airs on Spike TV.
