Jeremy Stephens vs. Rony Jason Agreed to for Unnanounced UFC Fight Night in Brazil

Jeremy Stephens will square off with Rony Jason at an as yet unannounced UFC Fight Night event expected for Oct. 9 in Brazil . MMAWeekly.com sources indicated that verbal agreements are in place for the bout. Stephens (21-9) staved off a pink slip, bouncing back from three consecutive losses, by dropping down to the featherweight division. He won his 145-pound debut by defeating Estevan Payan by unanimous decision at UFC 160 in May. Stephens had spent the previous five years of his UFC tenure bouncing back and forth between wins and losses. He hopes to find new life at featherweight, but faces a difficult next step

UFC 165 Fight Card Complete with Alex Caceres vs. Roland Delorme

A bantamweight match-up between former The Ultimate Fighter contestants Alex Careres and Roland Delorme has been added to UFC 165, finalizing the fight card with 13 bouts. Caceres (8-5, 1 no contest) appeared on the twelfth season of The Ultimate Fighter as a lightweight. Following the conclusion of the show, he moved to the featherweight division. After losing his first two fights in the UFC , Caceres dropped down to the bantamweight division. He won three of his first four fights in the new weight class, defeating Cole Escovedo, Damacio Page and Motonobu Tezuka. His one loss in the 135-pound division was by split decision to Edwin Figueroa.

The featherweight division in the UFC has become one of the most exciting in all of MMA. Next month, 145-pound champion Jose Aldo puts his title on the line against “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung , at UFC 163. It’s a fight that came about only after former WEC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis fell out of the title fight with a knee injury. Jung then was moved into the slot – after more than a year off recovering from injuries. That title opportunity came much to the chagrin of fighters like Ricardo Lamas , who was scheduled to meet the “Zombie” at this past weekend’s UFC 162, and Cub Swanson . But if what’s going on in the 145-pound division these days proves anything, it is that patience pays off. UFC 162 on Saturday featured two fights in the featherweight class — one between ex-lightweight champ Frankie Edgar (16-4-1 MMA, 10-4-1 UFC) and Charles Oliveira (16-4-1 MMA, UFC 4-4-1), and another between Cub Swanson (20-5 MMA, 5-1) against Germany’s Dennis Siver (21-9 MMA, 10-6 UFC). Both bouts won $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonuses. UFC 163 in August will be headlined by another featherweight bout, this one for the title, as champion Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) defends his belt against “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung (13-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC). The debut event on Fox Sports 1 in Boston two weeks later is set for at least four featherweight bouts, including Ireland’s up-and-coming Conor McGregor (13-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC). At this point in his career, there’s probably no reason for Cub Swanson to mince words. Swanson (19-5 MMA, 4-1 UFC) fights Dennis Siver (21-8 MMA, 10-5 UFC) next week at UFC 162, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It’s a fight Swanson is fine with. Sort of. Considering the musical chairs that have been going on in the UFC’s featherweight division of late, Swanson thought if there was any flip-flopping that went on, he might be the recipient of a fight that would get him closer to a title shot – or into the next title fight itself. Swanson recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) the Siver fight was what was offered, and rather than sit back with no other options, he took it – with a caveat he was hoping the UFC would be down with. But when Anthony Pettis pulled out of his featherweight title fight with champ Jose Aldo at UFC 163, the UFC broke up the Ricardo Lamas – Chan Sung Jung fight at UFC 162 and put “The Korean Zombie” into the fight with Aldo, leaving Lamas without an opponent. And instead of Swanson getting a call, his fight with Siver was left intact

One FC Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki Set for a Drop to Featherweight

Shinya Aoki has been the most dominant lightweights in Asia for the better part of a decade, but the reigning ONE FC lightweight champion and former Dream, Shooto and WAMMA champion is set for a new challenge: campaigning at 145 pounds. Talk of a possible drop down in weight for Aoki has been intensifying ever since his title victory over Kotetsu Boku . He made the 155-pound limit so easily for that fight that both him and his team stated that he would be likely to compete at featherweight in the future. The final stage in the preparatory process took place last weekend with Aoki completing a successful test cut. He posted a photo of himself on Facebook stepping on the scales at 65.6 kg along with a message saying that it had been “no problem.” The most obvious fight for the Japanese legend would be against reigning ONE FC featherweight champion Koji Oishi , who won the belt by beating Honorio Banario in Manila last month. Aoki, however, also holds the lightweight strap, which could complicate any prospective featherweight match-up, as ONE FC matchmaker Matt Hume might be reluctant to allow one fighter to hold two belts concurrently. If he remains at 155 pounds, there are a number of potential contenders coming through the ONE FC ranks including Kamal Shalorus , Caros Fodor and Lowen Tynanes, while the top-ranked fighters in the featherweight division at present are Oishi, Banario, Eric Kelly, and Bae Young Kwon. The decision to move down in weight was made by Aoki and the training team at Evolve MMA in Singapore, which has a proven track record of helping its fighters make weight drops
