On Feb. 23, the UFC showcased its first female fight. This past Saturday night at UFC on FOX 8 in Seattle, history was made again when the UFC promoted two women’s bouts on one card. Bantamweights Liz “Girl-Rilla” Carmouche and Germaine “The Iron Lady” de Randamie were both victorious in televised matchups.

Invicta FC Will Soon Join Reality Television with Its Own Reality Series

It was a reality show in 2005 that catapulted the Ultimate Fighting Championship and mixed martial arts into the mainstream with the debut of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV. Bellator MMA launched its reality series, Fight Master: Bellator MMA , in June. Invicta FC will join the promotions with reality shows in the near future. Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp made the announcement following Invicta FC 6 on July 13. “We’re doing a reality series that will be completely different than the format of what the UFC is doing and what Bellator is doing,” said Knapp. “It will give an opportunity for these athletes to be more known and elevated in the eyes of the public and all that kind of thing.” Invicta FC, an all-female fight promotion, held its first event in April 2012 and has seen steady growth in its first year of existence. “I think it’s important for the athletes to know that we’re striving and moving forward every day, and I think that gives them even more to fight for and be excited about,” she said. “I mean, come on. Look at these girls. Can you imagine watching a show with all these personalities that we have here in Invicta? This show is going to be amazing.” The organization is currently working on a pilot for the reality series. Bec Hyatt Believes She Did Enough to Win at Invicta FC 6 Despite What the Scorecards Read

Bec Hyatt has become a fan favorite in Invicta FC. Whenever the Australian mixed martial artist competes in the American-based all-female fight promotion, the crowd regularly chants, “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie…” In her fight with 18-year-old Japanese rising star Mizuki Inoue on July 13, it was no different. The crowd was on her side, but the scorecards were not. Hyatt (5-3) lost by unanimous decision, but believes she should have had her hand raised at the end of the three-round bout. “I guess I learned my lesson; don’t leave it in the hands of the judges,” said Hyatt during the Invicta FC 6 post-fight press conference. Hyatt feels that she won the opening and closing rounds of the fight. “I feel like my dominant position at the end of round one won me that round, and in round three I got in my groove,” she said. “I feel like I won rounds one and three, but the judges saw it different.” Despite her disagreement with the judges over who won the fight, Hyatt had nothing but positive comments to say about her opponent.

Talking to Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp about her organization’s first televised pay-per-view event this Saturday night, you get the sense that she can’t quite believe she’s doing this with her one-year-old company. “I’m so old school and the mindset is, you never go to pay-per-view until you’ve built that brand big and you can do those big numbers,” Knapp told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “It took me a little bit to change my mind.” More specifically, Knapp said, it took “a good deal,” one that wouldn’t cost significantly more than what she already was paying to put her all-female fight cards out via internet streams. “And also, you know what? This card deserves it,” said Knapp. “It gives more options to fans to view it, and I figured it’s worth the risk. No expectations, just want to go out and put on a good product like we always do.” That is how this grand experiment started, by relying on both the strength of the fights and the chance to watch them for free on the Internet, where MMA fandom lives. First, it was a free online stream through Invicta’s website, then an online pay-per-view through Ustream, and now a move to televised pay-per-view, at least in North America (Invicta FC 6 still will be available via Ustream elsewhere in the world).

Amanda Nunes vs. Sheila Gaff slotted for UFC 163 in Brazil

A bantamweight bout – and the first female fight in UFC-Brazil history – between promotional newcomer Amanda Nunes (7-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and Sheila Gaff (10-5-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is the latest addition to August’s UFC 163 event in Brazil. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) confirmed the bout with UFC officials following an initial report from Globo . UFC 163 takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.
