Bellator 100 heads to Phoenix with Lima-Saunders, Season 9 170 tourney

Bellator MMA will make its first visit to Phoenix in September for Bellator 100. Promotion officials on Friday announced the card, which will feature the delayed Season 8 welterweight tournament final, plus the start of the Season 9 170-pound tourney. Bellator 100 will take place Sept. 20 at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix. The main card will air live on Spike TV following prelims on Spike.com. Tickets for the event now are on sale starting at $25. In the main event, Douglas Lima (24-5 MMA, 6-1 BFC) meets Ben Saunders (16-5-2 MMA, 7-2 BFC) in the delayed Season 8 tournament final in the welterweight division, a fight that also is a rematch of the Season 5 tourney finals. The two were scheduled to meet at Bellator 93 in March, but consecutive Lima injuries pushed the fight back

Gilbert Melendez finds 15-minute silver lining on path back to UFC title fight

Gilbert Melendez saw Benson Henderson ‘s hand get raised, and right away he started looking for the silver lining. It didn’t take long for the former Strikeforce lightweight champion to find one after Henderson beat him by split-decision in a UFC title fight at UFC on FOX 7 in April. “I’m excited to fight three five-minute rounds,” Melendez recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “Initially after I lost, the first thing on my mind more than anything was, ‘Heck yeah – 15 minutes, that’s way easier.’ I’ve been training for 25-minute fights my last 10 fights, and it’s kind of tough on the body.” And because Melendez has indeed been in 10 straight title fights – going the full 25 minutes six times – he’ll get a welcome training reprieve now, while trying to work his way back to where he wants to be, and that’s back in another title fight. The road back there for Melendez (21-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) starts against Diego Sanchez (24-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) in October at UFC 166 in Houston, a fight booking first reported by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com)

After back-to-back losses in his final WEC appearances, Chan Sung Jung ‘s title aspirations appeared a lost cause. But then he began his current winning streak in spectacular fashion. Jung (13-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC), who recently replaced injured Anthony Pettis in an Aug. 3 UFC 163 title fight with champ Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC), got to the championship fight thanks to his recent work in the UFC, where he’s won three straight. Upon joining the organization in 2011, Jung fought Leonard Garcia at UFC Fight Night 24 and pulled off a Submission of the Year winner. Check out the full fight above. ‘Cyborg’ Santos happy for second chance ahead of Invicta FC 6 fight with Coenen

Cristiane Santos knows a thing or two about second chances. She’s in the middle of one right now, and she hopes it culminates with another world title. Santos (11-1) on Saturday meets Marloes Coenen (21-5) in a rematch at Invicta FC 6 – and Invicta’s featherweight title will be on the line. It will be just the second fight for “Cyborg” since returning to action after a 16-month layoff that included a suspension following a positive steroids test that led to her being stripped of her Strikeforce title. But with Invicta, where she won her first fight back from the layoff with a first-round TKO of Fiona Muxlow in April, “Cyborg” feels rejuvenated – and happy for another opportunity. Invicta FC 6 takes place Saturday at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Mo.
