Perennial top-ten lightweights Donald Cerrone and Rafael Dos Anjos met in the Octagon Wednesday in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 27 from the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Cerrone, who has become a fan-friendly scraper of epic proportions during his tenure in the UFC was making his tenth appearance in the Octagon and was looking to add some career momentum after his recent win over K.J. Noons at UFC 160. Dos Anjos was riding a UFC career best four-fight winning streak, and certainly wasn’t interested in seeing “The Cowboy” render all of his previous victories moot

Matt Brown Hopes His UFC Fight Night 26 Finish of Mike Pyle Earns Him a Marquee Match-up Next

Matt Brown (18-11) is making a strong case for himself being one of the most dangerous welterweights on the planet. The 32-year-old Cincinnati native has strung together a six-fight winning streak in the talent-rich 170-pound division, finishing his last four opponents. Riding high off his UFC Fight Night 26 first-round knockout of Mike Pyle , Brown hopes his recent performances earn him a marquee match-up in his next outing. “Hopefully it put me somewhere, in a good position to get some big fights,” said Brown during the UFC Fight Night 26 post-fight press conference. “In this sport you get what you earn, not what you deserve, so hopefully I earned something good here.” UFC president Dana White was impressed by Brown’s quick finish of Pyle, and believes Brown will face a top ten opponent next. “He made quick work out of a guy whom a lot of people respect, a tough, durable guy,” said White. “I think the fight put him in a real good position to possibly get a spot in that top ten and fight one of the guys in the top ten.” Brown’s win over Pyle accompanied by his winning streak will likely move him into the top ten rankings. And while a top ten-ranked opponent likely awaits him in his next outing, Brown has his eye on the man sitting at the top of the division, Georges St-Pierre .

Brazilian light heavyweight Glover Teixeira has been a professional mixed martial artist since debuting almost 11 years ago, in June 2002. UFC 165 Adds Costantinos Philippou vs. Francis Carmont to Sept. 21 Fight Card

Francis Carmont puts his 10-fight winning streak on the line against top-ten ranked Costa Philippou at UFC 165 in Toronto. Carmont(21-7) has been impressive since his arrival in the UFC, winning five fights in a row. Training out of the Tristar Gym alongside welterweight titleholder Georges St-Pierre , Carmont will be looking to log his first win over a top-ten-ranked opponent. Philippou (12-2, 1 no contest) is riding a five-fight winning streak, including a technical knockout of Tim Boetsch in his last outing at UFC 155 in December. His lone UFC loss came in his promotional debut against Nick Catone at UFC 128. It will be Philippou’s first fight in 2013. He was expected to face Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in May, but an injury forced him out of the bout. UFC 165 takes place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto and features two title bouts. The main event will showcase the UFC light heavyweight title bout between champion Jon Jones and challenger Alexander Gustafsson . Paul Daley was recently cut loose by Bellator MMA due to ongoing legal issues, and is free to fight for whomever wants him. Having fought for the UFC in the past and currently on a four-fight winning streak, would he ever be welcomed back to fight in the Octagon? It doesn’t appear so. When told that Daley has mentioned that he would like to come back to the UFC, company president Dana White seemed somewhat surprised and not too thrilled with the idea. “He wants to come back now? I thought he hated this place,” White said in his UFC on Fox 8 post-fight scrum with reporters. “I don’t think so.” Whether White thinks it’s a good idea or not, Daley made it clear that he would welcome the opportunity

Brazilian phenom Goiti Yamauchi debuts at Bellator 99

Brazilian phenom Goiti Yamauchi , a 20-year-old who already boasts a 14-1 pro MMA record, will make his Bellator debut on Sept. 13 at Bellator 99. Yamauchi (14-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC) told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) he’s scheduled to fight fellow featherweight Musa Toliver (9-8-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC) at the event, which takes place at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, Calif. Yamauchi vs. Toliver will be part of the Spike.com-streamed prelims, which precede the night’s Spike TV-televised main card. Yamauchi, who’s riding a nine-fight winning streak with 12 submissions in 14 career victories, was born in Japan to Brazilian parents but moved to the South American country when he was just 3 years old. Tim Boetsch vs. Luke Rockhold Added to UFC 166 Fight Card in Houston

A middleweight bout between former Strikeforce middleweight titleholder Luke Rockhold (10-2) and Tim Boetsch (16-6) has been added to the UFC 166: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos 3 fight card in Houston. UFC officials confirmed the match-up to ESPN.com on Tuesday. Boetsch rose to contender status in the UFC’s 205-pound division in 2012, stringing together a four-fight winning streak that included wins over Yushin Okami and Hector Lombard , but has lost his last two fights. Rockhold made his UFC debut on May 18, losing by knockout to former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort . Prior to his promotional debut loss, Rockhold was on an impressive nine-fight winning streak. Both fighters will be looking to rebound from loses in their most recent outings and move back into the title picture. UFC 166 takes place on Oct. 19 at the Toyoto Center in Houston.

It’s Business as Usual for Demetrious Johnson Heading into Second UFC Title Defense

Every fighter has his own unique way of preparing for a fight. Some scout their opponents and watch hours of video. Some bring in training partners to simulate their opponent’s style. UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson doesn’t do any of that. Johnson (17-2-1) was originally expected to face John Moraga on April 13, but a shoulder injury pushed back the bout to the UFC on Fox 8 fight card on July 27. Now healed, Johnson is ready for his second UFC title defense. “Recovery has gone great. Once I got cleared from a doctor to start training again, I started training,” Johnson said on a recent media conference call . “I’m feeling great; shoulder’s feeling 100-percent, and just ready to do work.” Moraga (13-1) is on a seven-fight winning streak and possesses solid wrestling and good boxing, but Johnson doesn’t feel that Moraga brings anything to the table that he hasn’t already faced. “My last fight I fought, I think he’s probably one of the guys in the division that has that one-strike knockout power where he drops guys, and you’ve seen him do it all the time. I’m speaking of John Dodson. John Moraga possesses great skills. He throws great combinations, but as far as me, when it comes to my training and preparing for fighters or fights, we don’t bring anybody in to emulate my opponent. We don’t go out and seek information on my opponent,” said Johnson. “We just train hard. I believe in my training partners and my coaching, and that’s what we’ve done and it hasn’t let us down yet.” Johnson doesn’t worry about what his opponent is going to do or what he does best. His only concern is becoming a better fighter.
