Following his final Strikeforce bout on Jan. 12, the former Olympian said he planned to drop to the light heavyweight division by the end of 2013 and kick Jon Jones ’ (expletive). During a recent episode of UFC Tonight , it was revealed that Cormier’s UFC 166 match-up with Roy Nelson would be his final fight in the heavyweight division and he plans to ask for an immediate title shot in the 205-pound weight class if he’s victorious on Oct.

If Daniel Cormier (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) defeats fellow heavyweight Roy Nelson (19-8 MMA, 6-4 UFC) in UFC 166′s co-main event, he’s planning to ask for a title shot at light heavyweight. Cormier, who confirmed the plans with FUEL TV’s Ariel Helwani on “UFC Tonight,” will ask to “cut the line” to get an immediate shot at the 205-pound belt. UFC 166, which takes place Oct. 19 at Houston’s Toyota Center, marks Cormier’s final fight at heavyweight, a division in which he won a Strikeforce world grand prix before topping ex-champ Frank Mir in his UFC debut earlier this year. The fight card is set for next month’s UFC 164 event, and an intriguing featherweight bout between Dustin Poirier (13-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) and Erik Kock (13-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) has secured the final main-card spot and will kick off the night’s pay-per-view main card. UFC 164 takes place Aug. 31 at Bradley Center in Milwaukee. In addition to the PPV lineup, prelims air on FX and stream on Facebook. UFC middleweight Brian Stann , a former WEC light heavyweight champion, has announced his retirement from the sport. Stann (12-6 MMA, 6-5 UFC) exits the sport after a “Fight of the Night” loss to Wanderlei Silva in March in what will be his final fight. Stann confirmed his retirement to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com); he made his official announcement on ” The MMA Hour .” Stann will now focus his career on broadcasting and his family. On Wednesday, FOX Sports announced the Atlanta-area resident is part of the new Atlantic Coast Conference football crew for FOX Sports South. Since the UFC’s broadcast deal with FOX began in 2012, Stann has been active as an analyst for both FOX and FUEL TV’s pre- and post-fight UFC event coverage. “Yesterday, news broke that I’m going to be branching out and doing some college football,” Stann said on the show. “But a couple months ago, I had made the decision and just wasn’t sure when I would announce it, that I was no longer going to continue fighting

In fact, other than teammate and current UFC champion Cain Velasquez , he’s willing to fight anybody the organization throws at him. Cormier, a former Strikeforce grand prix winner who recently made his UFC debut with a victory over Frank Mir , is awaiting his next assignment. He’s cutting down to about 220 pounds for a final fight in his current division before a planned drop to light heavyweight. It appears that the MMA retirement of Mirko Filipovic might not have stuck. “Cro Cop” (28-10-2) reportedly will continue his return to MMA to face Aleksander Emelianenko (22-6) in November in Russia. That news comes from Russian outlet ValeTudo.ru . The two heavyweights, according to the report, are set to rematch for Russia’s Legend Fighting Show. Emelianenko just this past month competed for that promotion, stopping Bob Sapp 78 seconds into the fight in Moscow. Filipovic and Emelianenko first met in August 2004 at “PRIDE: Final Conflict 2004.” Filipovic won that fight with a first-round knockout stemming from one of his already legendary head kicks. The loss was the first of Emelianenko’s career. Now, more than nine years later, he’ll have a shot at avenging that loss

Megumi Fujii announces retirement plans after one final fight in Japan

After nearly 10 years in the MMA game, Megumi Fujii will hang up the gloves – after one final fight. Fujii (26-2) on Saturday announced her pending retirement on her Twitter account, saying she will compete for Vale Tudo Japan on October 3, then call it quits. Of her 26 career wins, the 39-year-old has 19 by submission and has never been stopped – her only two losses have gone the distance. Fujii started her MMA career an amazing 22-0 before suffering her first loss, a split-decision setback to Zoila Frausto Gurgel at Bellator 34 in a fight to determine the promotion’s first 115-pound women’s champion. Prior to that loss, after fighting just three times outside her native Japan in her first 19 fights, she came to the States and picked up three wins for Bellator.
