Invicta FC crowned its first featherweight champion on Saturday with a pay-per-view headliner and rematch between Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos and Marloes Coenen . The five-round bout, which helped mark the organization’s move from online to traditional PPV, took place at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Mo. Santos (12-1) earned a TKO victory in the first meeting at a 2010 Strikeforce event, and she looked to do it again when she rematched Coenen (21-6) this past weekend at the July 13 event. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum ‘s first meeting nine years ago with the now-defunct PRIDE promotion was a snapshot of two fighters miles apart in their development as fighters. Werdum (16-5-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC) then was 10 fights into his career as an MMA fighter who had transitioned to the burgeoning sport from the world of competitive jiu-jitsu. Stats for the fight reflected his skills: He took Nogueira down 10 times and only gave up three. Nogueira (34-7-1 MMA, 5-3 UFC), while no longer at the apex of his career after losing his PRIDE title to Fedor Emelianenko , still was considered one of the most formidable heavyweights in the division. For that fight, he didn’t need to use the jiu-jitsu skills that previously had served him so well. Instead, he was far more effective in exploiting Werdum’s relative lack of experience in striking. He landed more total strikes and knocked down Werdum on four occasions. In the end, it was Nogueira’s experience that carried the day, with judges awarding him a unanimous-decision win after three rounds.

BJ Penn is Considering a Return to Fighting in the UFC Lightweight Division

Former two-division UFC champion BJ Penn is contemplating a return to fighting in the lightweight division. UFC Tonight reports that “the door is still open” for Penn to “return to MMA in the near future.” In fact, the 34-year-old Hawaiian is currently in training to assess whether or not he is “mentally and physically prepared to get back into this sport.” Penn has bounced around weight classes throughout his career, but if he returns to fighting, it will be in the lightweight division. Penn (16-9-2) made his professional mixed martial arts debut in the UFC on May 4, 2001, at UFC 31. He fought in the inaugural UFC lightweight title fight at UFC 41 against Jens Pulver , losing by majority decision. In his welterweight debut, he defeated former champion Matt Hughes at UFC 46. He was later stripped of the title for accepting fights outside of the UFC. He returned to the UFC in an unsuccessful run in the 170-pound division before dropping back down to the lightweight division, capturing the title and defending it twice. While holding the lightweight belt, Penn moved back up to the welterweight division for a rematch with Georges St-Pierre . He was soundly defeated, unlike in their first meeting at UFC 58.

“The Ultimate Fighter” Season 18 coaching lineup underwent a significant change this past week with the announcement that unbeaten rising star Cat Zingano (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) had withdrawn from the competition due to a torn ACL. Zingano had been scheduled to coach a team of male and female fighters against UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), but the knee injury will sideline Zingano until 2014. Zingano earned her “TUF 18″ coaching position by stopping former Strikeforce champion Miesha Tate (13-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in April. With Zingano injured, Tate stepped in to take her place and surprised Rousey when she showed up for the first day of filming this past Tuesday. Rousey, who had not been informed about the coaching change, was reportedly shocked and upset because she initially believed that it was she who had been replaced. After confirming that her spot on “TUF 18″ was safe, Rousey began to warm up to the idea of coaching against Tate. The arch rivals will face off for a second time later this year, and Rousey’s UFC title will be on the line. Rousey became the final Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion in the pair’s first meeting in March 2012 when she submitted Tate with a gruesome first-round armbar
