Matt Brown (18-11) is making a strong case for himself being one of the most dangerous welterweights on the planet. The 32-year-old Cincinnati native has strung together a six-fight winning streak in the talent-rich 170-pound division, finishing his last four opponents. Riding high off his UFC Fight Night 26 first-round knockout of Mike Pyle , Brown hopes his recent performances earn him a marquee match-up in his next outing. “Hopefully it put me somewhere, in a good position to get some big fights,” said Brown during the UFC Fight Night 26 post-fight press conference. “In this sport you get what you earn, not what you deserve, so hopefully I earned something good here.” UFC president Dana White was impressed by Brown’s quick finish of Pyle, and believes Brown will face a top ten opponent next. “He made quick work out of a guy whom a lot of people respect, a tough, durable guy,” said White. “I think the fight put him in a real good position to possibly get a spot in that top ten and fight one of the guys in the top ten.” Brown’s win over Pyle accompanied by his winning streak will likely move him into the top ten rankings. And while a top ten-ranked opponent likely awaits him in his next outing, Brown has his eye on the man sitting at the top of the division, Georges St-Pierre .

Thiago Alves ‘ road back to the octagon will wait once again. Alves (19-9 MMA, 11-6 UFC) has been forced out of his welterweight bout against Matt Brown (17-11 MMA, 10-5 UFC) at UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 in August, and Mike Pyle (25-8-1 MMA, 8-3 UFC) will step in as his replacement. The UFC announced the change on Wednesday. The fight is expected to be part of the six-fight main card. UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 takes place Aug. 17 at TD Garden in Boston and will be the UFC’s debut on the new FOX Sports 1 cable network. Pyle has won four straight fights following a TKO loss to Rory MacDonald in August 2011. He started his current run with three straight knockouts, including a first-round “Knockout of the Night” stoppage of Josh Neer 13 months ago.

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey tries to emulate her favorite fighter, Fedor Emelianenko , in her fights. “My favorite fighter to watch ever I would say is Fedor Emelianenko,” Rousey said during a Facebook chat sponsored by Metro PCS on Wednesday. Emelianenko held the Pride FC heavyweight title from 2003 to 2006. In an eight-year span, the Russian strung together an unprecedented 28-fight winning streak. He’s widely regarded as the greatest heavyweight of all time. “He’s always going to be my favorite. It was the first highlight reel I ever saw of MMA. I loved his style and how he came from a Judo-Sambo background, and I really try to emulate his style every time that I fight,” said Rousey. It appears that the MMA retirement of Mirko Filipovic might not have stuck. “Cro Cop” (28-10-2) reportedly will continue his return to MMA to face Aleksander Emelianenko (22-6) in November in Russia. That news comes from Russian outlet ValeTudo.ru . The two heavyweights, according to the report, are set to rematch for Russia’s Legend Fighting Show. Emelianenko just this past month competed for that promotion, stopping Bob Sapp 78 seconds into the fight in Moscow. Filipovic and Emelianenko first met in August 2004 at “PRIDE: Final Conflict 2004.” Filipovic won that fight with a first-round knockout stemming from one of his already legendary head kicks. The loss was the first of Emelianenko’s career. Now, more than nine years later, he’ll have a shot at avenging that loss

World Series of Fighting announced their Aug. 10 fight card on Thursday that takes place at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif. Slated for the live, five-fight NBC Sports Network telecast of the World Series of Fighting event is a light heavyweight showdown between world kickboxing champion turned unbeaten MMA upstart Tyrone “King of the Ring” Spong (1-0) and fellow hard-hitting KO artist Angel “The Dream” DeAnda (11-2). The 27-year-old Spong is a veteran of 77 professional kickboxing bouts while DeAnda has scored (T)KOs in 10 of his 11 career MMA victories, including his last four. Marlon Moraes (10-4) will battle fellow streaking bantamweight Brandon “Hot Rod” Hempleman (9-1). The 25-year-old Moraes is coming off his fourth consecutive victory – a stunning first round knockout of rival star Tyson Nam by way of head kick at the World Series of Fighting event on March 23. Hempleman is a riding a six-fight winning streak. In other main card action, World Series of Fighting President and six-time world kickboxing champion Ray Sefo (2-1) will shed his business attire and put on his fighting trunks and combat gloves to face heavy-handed knockout artist Dave Huckaba (20-5). After being on the receiving end of a “Knockout of the Year” candidate, Muhammed Lawal delivered one of his own at Wednesday’s Bellator 96 event. In headliner of the event, Lawal (10-2 MMA, 2-1 BFC) scored a violent first-round knockout after blasting a downed Seth Petruzelli (14-8 MMA, 1-2 BFC) with a monstrous right hand. The one-hitter quitter moved Lawal to the finale of the four-man “Summer Series” light-heavyweight tournament, where he’ll meet fellow Bellator 96 winner Jacob Noe . With the win, Lawal successfully rebounded from a spinning-backfist knockout to Emanuel Newton earlier this year. Bellator 96 took place at WinStar World Casino at Thackerville, Okla.
