Jon Jones and Anderson Silva were nominated for ESPN’s Best Fighter ESPY, but once again, they were beaten out by boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr . The ESPYs are voted on by fans and were awarded Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Jones and Silva have each been nominated for the award three times since its inception in 2007, but no mixed martial artist has ever won it. Mayweather has won the award five times, while Manny Pacquiao has won it on two occasions. ESPY voting takes place online and is open until the time the award is handed out, so much of the voting came after Silva got knocked out by Chris Weidman at UFC 162 on July 6. While fans may have voted Mayweather the top fighter, UFC broadcaster Joe Rogan, in the August issue of Inked magazine, pointed out that boxing is too limited when comparing fighters from that sport to mixed martial arts. “MMA for sure is more of a realistic contest, more of a realistic test as far as using the body in martial arts competition,” said Rogan. “Although not considered a martial art, boxing is really a martial art

MMA once again fell short to boxing in ESPN’s ESPY awards. Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. edged out UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva to win the 2013 “Best Fighter” ESPY. The results, produced by a fan vote, were unveiled at Wednesday’s ESPYS ceremony in Los Angeles. In addition to Jones and Silva, Mayweather topped fellow boxers Canelo Alvarez and Danny Garcia.

Anderson Silva and Jon Jones Nominated for Best Fighter ESPY; Can Either Beat Floyd Mayweather?

UFC champions Anderson Silva and Jon Jones have been nominated for ESPN’s prestigious ESPY Award for “Best Fighter” for the second consecutive year. But can either of them edge out last year’s winner, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. , who is also nominated again this year? Rounding out the 2013 nominees are Mayweather’s fellow boxers Danny Garcia and Canelo Alvarez. This is the third time each for Silva and Jones to be nominated for the award. Jones has been nominated three years in a row, while Silva was nominated for the award in 2009, 2012, and 2013. Silva (33-4) has not lost in the Octagon since making his UFC debut in 2006. He has won 16 consecutive UFC bouts, has held the middleweight championship since late 2006, and set numerous other records.

Once again, a pair of UFC champions are nominated for an ESPY award, an honor that has thus far remained out of reach for any top-level mixed-martial-artists. Light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and middleweight champ Anderson Silva are among the nominees for “Best Fighter” at the 2013 ESPN Espy Awards. Also nominated in the category are boxers Canelo Alvarez, Danny Garcia and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Fans can vote on the “Best Fighter” of the year and 34 other categories at the 2013 ESPY Awards’ official website . It’s the third straight year Jones has been nominated in the “Best Fighter” category. It’s also the third nomination for Silva, who was put up for the award in 2009 and 2012.
