UFC on FOX 8 salaries: Lawler, Guillard, Herman earn top disclosed paydays

Main-card fighter Robbie Lawler ($156,000) and preliminary-card competitors Melvin Guillard ($84,000) and Ed Herman ($74,000) earned the biggest disclosed paydays from this past weekend’s UFC on FOX 8 event. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today obtained the salary/fight-purse information from the Washington State Department of Licensing. UFC on FOX 8 took place July 27 at Seattle’s KeyArena, and the main card aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook. UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson , who submitted John Moraga in the night’s main event, tied for the fifth largest disclosed payday on the card. He earned $58,000, which included a $29,000 win bonus. The total disclosed payroll for the event was $850,000. The full UFC on FOX 8 paydays included: Demetrious Johnson: $58,000 (includes $29,000 win bonus) def. John Moraga: $17,000 Rory MacDonald : $48,000 (includes $24,000 win bonus) def. SEATTLE – Demetrious Johnson , Melvin Guillard , Ed Herman and Trevor Smith each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s UFC on FOX 8 event. Johnson won “Submission of the Night,” Guillard earned the “Knockout of the Night” and Herman and Smith picked up “Fight of the Night” honors. UFC officials announced the winners at the night’s post-event news conference, which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) attended. UFC on FOX 8 took place at KeyArena in Seattle. The main card aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook. Johnson (18-2-1 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC) dominated John Moraga (12-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) with 11 takedowns into the fifth round, but the flyweight champion continued to go after submissions. Deep in the fifth, Johnson went after an armbar and got it, forcing Moraga to tap with just 1:17 left in the fight for the latest submission in UFC history. Guillard (31-12-2 MMA, 12-8 UFC) needed to rebound in a big way after back-to-back losses and four setbacks in his past five fights.

SEATTLE – MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) was on scene for today’s official fighter weigh-ins for UFC on FOX 8, where all 24 competitors are official for Saturday’s card. In the main event, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, who lives near Seattle, defends his belt for the second time when he takes on John Moraga – a fighter who is 2-0 in the UFC, but in two fights that have opened up preliminary cards. Johnson and Moraga had a reasonably calm face-off after each weighing in a half-pound under the limit at 124.5 pounds. Saturday’s co-main event has stolen some of the thunder from the title fight thanks to the back-and-forth trash talk between welterweight contenders Jake Ellenberger and Rory MacDonald. But despite the growing bad blood, their face-off was fairly uneventful, as well. Ellenberger weighed in at 171 pounds, while MacDonald was 170.5

When former Tachi Palace Fights flyweight champion Ian McCall inked a deal with the UFC in late 2011, he had high expectations. He entered the 2012 UFC Flyweight Tournament to determine the inaugural UFC 125-pound champion. He faced Demetrious Johnson in the opening round and the two fought to a draw. Johnson was originally declared the winner, but after a scoring error correction, the fight was ruled a draw. Johnson defeated McCall by unanimous decision in a rematch. In his next outing, McCall faced Joseph Benavidez and lost via unanimous decision. He’s gone 0-2-1 in his three UFC fights, and was not in a good place mentally. His personal life was coming unraveled as well as his career. The 29-year-old fighter made changes in his life, eliminated some relationships, distanced himself from others, and is ready to move forward inside and outside of the cage. “I’m in a much better place. You know, I’ve kind of blown my UFC career so far, but now it’s time to earn what’s rightfully mine,” McCall told MMAWeekly.com content partner Knockout Radio . “I’ve always been physically ready. Every fight, I’ve always been in shape. I’ve always been there. Just for me it’s a mental thing because I can be a head case and that really has been what’s gotten me down in the past, but I took personal steps in my personal life, new relationships, new whatever it may be to just change for the better.

Johnson (17-2-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) he missed but one day of training to be with wife Destiny as she gave birth to his son Tyren after 14 hours in labor. So for those who think his focus might be off for his second attempted title defense, they can think again. “I didn’t have to miss one OBGYN appointment, and people were like, ‘Oh, you’re distracted,’” Johnson said. “I’m like, ‘Last time I checked, this is life, and fighting is part of my life, and so is my wife.’” Of course, it was an entirely new experience in his life, which wasn’t exactly what he expected at times. “The labor was a little more intense than I thought it was,” said Johnson, who headlines the FOX-televised card against Moraga (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) on Saturday at Seattle’s KeyArena, which is a short drive from his home in Kirkland.

UFC on FOX 8 main-eventer and flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson holds the dubious honor of being the only current champ to never have headlined a pay-per-view event. But that could change soon, according to UFC President Dana White. “[Johnson] has been on a lot of big cards,” White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “He’s going to fight on FOX again, and we’re in the building phase of that division. So the answer is yes.” The 125-pound division made its debut in March 2012 with an unofficial four-man tournament to crown the UFC’s inaugural flyweight champ. Although delayed by a botched score early on in the competition, Johnson won the title this past September with a split call over Joseph Benavidez and in January defended the belt with a unanimous score over John Dodson
