Ryan Bader: I’m Ready to Go Out There and Upset Glover and the UFC’s Plans for Him

Light heavyweights Glover Teixeira and Ryan Bader were originally expected to meet at UFC 160 on May 25, but a knee injury forced Bader out of the fight. Teixeira defeated Bader’s replacement, James Te Huna, by submission that night, but now that Bader is healthy, the two will finally face off at UFC Fight Night 28 on Wednesday. While Teixeira had to change his focus to Te Huna, Bader’s focus remained on Teixeira, and he believes that is an advantage. “We were thinking about him long before and he had to switch it up and think about Te Huna, so we’ve been having a long training camp for him. At least thinking about him for when I healed up and started training again and getting back at it, it was for Glover,” Bader told MMAWeekly content partner Knockout Radio

The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate has yet to premiere on Fox Sports 1, but the UFC is already working on the season eighteen follow-up. UFC officials on Wednesday announced tryouts for TUF 19 would focus on middleweight (185-pound) and light heavyweight (205-pound) fighters. The initial tryouts will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 27, in Indianapolis, ahead of the next day’s UFC Fight Night 27: Condit vs. Kampmann 2 event at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Tim Kennedy Apologizes to UFC for Fighter Pay Comments, Says He Was Taken Out of Context

Tim Kennedy earlier this week criticized his employer, the UFC, for how much it pays its fighters, and tried to put into context for fans how difficult it can be to make a living as a professional fighter. On Thursday, however, Kennedy issued a statement on his official Facebook page, retracting his comments and apologizing for them. Kennedy, while a guest on the GrappleTalk podcast, characterized it as “pathetic” that so many fighters had to work a “day job” instead of being able to focus full-time on their fighting careers. Kennedy has various business interests and his military career along with what he makes from fighting, which he said doesn’t amount to much after expenses and taxes. “It would be slim pickings to survive off what I make in fighting,” he told GrappleTalk. “It’s a good thing I have another job because the UFC doesn’t pay very well.” Kennedy said his comments were taken out of context, but accepted responsibility for his statements, apologizing to the UFC, company president Dana White , CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, and matchmaker Joe Silva. Kennedy’s statement: “I recently made comments regarding fighter pay. The intent of these statements was to highlight that professional fighters incur significant expense associated with their preparations to fight and that fighter compensation is still not on par with other major sports.

That’s because, especially for a guy who started off with all the buzz that comes from the pro wrestling-to-MMA transition, the heat of the spotlight has cooled considerably for Lashley in MMA. The man who once looked like he might become the next Brock Lesnar is now fighting on small shows like Saturday night’s Global Warrior Challenge event in Kansas City, Mo., where he’s not even the pay-per-view event’s headliner. What’s more, he’s small-timing it on purpose. At least he says he is, and he says he has a good reason, even if other people don’t understand it. “Before when I was fighting, I just felt like I had to go out there and win,” Lashley told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “That was my only focus.
