UFC 163 medical suspensions: Headliners Aldo, Jung get lengthy terms

As pictures indicated, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo suffered a serious foot injury that could keep him out of action for three months. The UFC 163 medical suspensions, which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently requested and today received, indicate Aldo has been given a 90-day term, including 60 days with no contact for a fracture of his right foot. Chan Sung Jung , who challenged Aldo at this past Saturday’s pay-per-view event, could be out even longer. He was suspended 180 days or until cleared by a doctor for a shoulder dislocation that helped bring a halt to the title fight in the fourth round when Aldo took advantage after seeing the injury and earned a TKO stoppage. UFC 163 took place at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Its main card aired live on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo defended his 145-pound title at UFC 163 on Saturday by defeating “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung , but may have suffered a broken foot early in the title bout. “When the fight started the first thing I did, I kicked him and he put his knee, so the first time I kicked him I don’t know if I broke my foot. I don’t know, it is very swollen,” said Aldo during the post-fight press conference. “He knew that I was going be giving him low kicks, so the first combination I think he left his knee there. I kicked straight at his knee. I don’t know if I broke my foot. It’s very swollen. I can barely walk properly,” he added. The titleholder attended the post-fight press conference, but departed early to go to the hospital and have his foot evaluated. Kicks at a high volume are typical when Aldo fights, but he had to make adjustments early on to deal with the foot injury. “I had to change my strategy. I had to totally change it,” he said. “We tried to control it in a different way. Everyone already expects for me to be kicking low kicks, but I’m a complete fighter. I always try to practice everything,” said the champion. “Whereever the fight goes, I always try to use all my weapons. I don’t only have one weapon. Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland Added to UFC 165 Card That Now Features Two Title Fights

The UFC interim bantamweight title bout between titleholder Renan Barao and challenger Eddie Wineland has been added to the UFC 165 fight card set for Sept. 21 in Toronto. UFC officials made the announcement on Thursday. Barao and Wineland were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 161 on June 15, but a foot injury forced Barao out of the fight. With the interim bantamweight title bout rescheduled, UFC 165 now features two title bouts. Barao (30-1, 1 no contest) won the interim title by defeating Urijah Faber at UFC 149 on July 21, 2012. The 26-year-old Brazilian hasn’t lost since 2005 and is on a 30-fight winning streak. Wineland (20-8-1) earned his title shot by defeating Brad Pickett at UFC 155 on Dec. 29.

White unsure of Cruz and Barao return dates, would advise Wineland to fight

WINNIPEG – With the bantamweight title picture in major flux, UFC President Dana White said he’s unsure just when his champion will be back – let alone his interim titleholder. With Dominick Cruz (19-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) on the shelf for about 20 months since his most recent title defense, interim champ Renan Barao (30-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) was set to put his strap on the line against Eddie Wineland (20-8-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) in the main event of Saturday’s UFC 161, which takes place at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. But Barao suffered a foot injury this past month, wiping that fight out and bumping a light heavyweight bout between Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson into the headlining spot. White on Thursday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) he doesn’t have a prognosis for Cruz or Barao. “No on either,” White said. “I heard for Barao, it was ligaments, and those are never good. You’d actually rather break a bone than have that happen.” White previously has told MMAjunkie.com that in the case of Cruz, who has been sidelined with back-to-back knee surgeries, he wouldn’t be placed in a position where he would be stripped of his title – provided he’s able to return and doesn’t suffer another injury in the process. And when UFC interim champion Renan Barao (30-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) is able to return, Wineland (20-8-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) wants the title shot he was supposed to have on Saturday at UFC 161.
