UFC 163 Prelims TV Ratings Suffer From Lack of Promtion and Difficult Summer Season

UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie failed to drive much interest heading into Saturday’s pay-per-view event, which emanated from Rio de Janeiro, and that was reflected in the TV ratings for the preliminary bout broadcast on FX. The UFC 163 Prelims on FX attracted an audience of 1,000,000 viewers for the four-bout, two-hour broadcast. UFC 163 admittedly suffered from a lack of promotional attention overall with the launch of Fox’s new nationwide sports network, Fox Sports 1, and the re-branding of Fuel TV to Fox Sports 2, receiving the lion’s share of the media giant’s focus.

UFC Fight for the Troops 3 event targeted for Nov. 6

LAS VEGAS – The third installment of the UFC Fight for the Troops event series is targeted for Nov. 6. UFC President Dana White announced the plans during a Q&A session at Friday’s UFC Fan Expo in Las Vegas. However, a host site and potential bouts were not disclosed. The Wednesday event, though, is expected to air on FOX Sports 1, the new cable home for UFC events, following prelims on Facebook. To date the UFC has hosted two Fight for the Troops events

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is headed to Boston on Aug. 17 for its sophomore effort in the city. UFC on Fox Sports 1: Shogun vs. Sonnen is slated for the TD Gardens and is set to serve as featured programming for the launch of Fox’s new nationwide sports channel, Fox Sports 1. A Boston Herald report on Tuesday brought to light an issue that UFC officials faced in regards to all mixed martial arts competitors in Massachusetts being required to have a valid Social Security number, even foreign-born participants. The report noted that the UFC was seeking an exemption from the law, and suggested that the event could be cancelled altogether if things weren’t worked out. The report jumped the gun a good bit, as UFC sources assured MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday that the event “is not in danger, and we’re working on getting visas and social security numbers. ‘UFC on FOX Sports 1 1: Shogun vs. Rua’ lineup set, new channel gets 10 bouts

The 13-bout lineup is set for the debut UFC on FOX Sports 1 event, and the new cable channel will televise 10 of the 13 fights. UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 takes place Aug. 17 at TD Garden in Boston. The main card, including a light-heavyweight headliner between Mauricio Rua (21-7 MMA, 5-5 UFC) and Chael Sonnen (27-13-1 MMA, 6-6 UFC), airs on FOX Sports 1, a new channel that replaces the UFC’s existing homes on FX and FUEL TV. In addition to the six-bout main card, the channel also airs four prelims. In the featured bout, bantamweight contenders Michael McDonald (15-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) and Brad Pickett (23-7 MMA, 3-2 UFC) clash and set the tone for the night’s main card. Meanwhile, the night’s first three bouts stream online via Facebook and YouTube. Of note is a featherweight bout between veterans Cole Miller (19-7 MMA, 8-5 UFC) and Manny Gamburyan (12-7 MMA, 3-5 UFC), which closes out the stream

Liz Carmouche Draws Octagon Newcomer Jessica Andrade at UFC on Fox 8

Liz Carmouche has already been part of a lot of firsts in UFC history, and she’s only one fight into her tenure with the promotion. She was in the first women’s title fight, the first women’s bout to headline a pay-per-view, and the first women’s bout to take place in the Octagon. Now that she’s fought current UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey , she’s moving on to become one of the first two women to fight on Fox. Carmouche was originally slated to face Miesha Tate at UFC on Fox 8 on July 27 in Seattle, but Tate was called on to coach opposite Rousey on TUF 18 when Cat Zingano had to withdraw from the job due to a severe knee injury. Carmouche will now face promotional newcomer Jessica Andrade at UFC on Fox 8. The new bout was first reported by MMAFighting.com . She (8-3) may have failed in her bid to wrest the belt from Rousey, but Carmouche came as close as anyone ever has to derailing the Rousey train. She eventually succumbed to the same submission as the rest of the UFC women’s bantamweight champion’s opponents, but she’ll get the opportunity to redeem herself in Seattle.
