When former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal met career journeyman Emmanuel Newton in the semifinals of the 2013 Bellator light heavyweight tournament back in February, he did so as an astonishing -1200 favorite. On that night, however, Newton shocked the MMA universe by dispatching the former Strikeforce champion with a stunning spinning backfist knockout early in the first round. Not only was it one of the bigger upsets in recent memory, it also marked the first promotional defeat for Bellator’s biggest free agent signing to that date. Surprisingly, for Lawal, a former Oklahoma State All-American, the upset was much easier to deal with than one might think. “With my amateur wrestling background, a loss is a loss,” Lawal told MMAWeekly.com. “It’s not like MMA is a greater sport than wrestling

Bantamweight Ed West granted release from Bellator, looks for quick turnaround

As far as breakups go, Ed West ‘s departure from Bellator MMA sounds like the start of a courtship, not a divorce. But sometimes in the pro sports world, athletes and their bosses part ways amicably – or mostly amicably. That appears to be the case with West and the California-based promotion. West (18-7 MMA, 4-3 BFC) on Tuesday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that he has been granted his release from Bellator and will be exploring the free-agent MMA market, and Bellator officials confirmed the fighter’s release. “I spent three years with Bellator, and I had a really good time with them,” West said.

Ex-Bellator welterweight champ Lyman Good now officially a free agent

After four years, Bellator MMA’s first welterweight champion, Lyman Good , is leaving the promotion as a free agent. Good’s legal rep, David M. Fish, announced the departure today. “The entire team at Bellator has been really good to me throughout my career and now they’ve given me the green light to go and fight anywhere I want,” Good (15-3 MMA, 8-3 BFC) stated in a press release forwarded to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). The 28-year-old Good was one of Bellator’s first stars in the promotion’s first events in 2009. He won the Season 1 welterweight tournament and inaugural welterweight title after three straight finishes. His title reign would be cut short by Season 2 tourney winner Ben Askren , who handed him a decision loss in his first defense and remains champion.

Dana White on Eddie Alvarez: At this point, ‘he should fight for’ Bellator

LAS VEGAS – UFC President Dana White believes, after months of the fighter’s legal jousting with his current home, Eddie Alvarez ‘s best course of action may be fighting again for Bellator MMA. Alvarez, Bellator’s former lightweight champion and a recent prized free agent, received a UFC offer in late 2012. The lucrative deal included a $250,000 signing bonus, likely six-figure fight purses and potentially a piece of pay-per-view revenue. But after Bellator made what it deemed a matching offer, the two sides filed dueling lawsuits. Now, barring a settlement, they won’t be required to see each other in court until after Sept. 15, 2014 . White knows that means 29-year-old Alvarez (24-3), who hasn’t fought since an October knockout of Patricky “Pitbull” Freire at Bellator 76, could be on the sidelines for two years during the peak of his career.

Manager: Roy Nelson-UFC negotiation ‘not out of the ballpark’

UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson now is a restricted free agent and is negotiating with the promotion on his next contract, according to his rep. Manager Mike Kogan today indicated that a deal should get done before Nelson’s exclusive negotiating period ends at the end of August, when he may entertain offers from other promotions. “The length of his exclusive negotiating period isn’t really a factor right now,” Kogan told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “We’re actively talking. I’m sure it’s not going to take a few months to make a deal, if there is a deal to be made.” Specifics of the negotiations remain a closed-door conversation.
