UFC Brazil Event in September Facing Issues in Porto Alegre, Could Return to Belo Horizonte

The UFC has been targeting a return date to Brazil on Sept. 4 as part of its early efforts on the new U.S. national sports network, Fox Sports 1 . Their initial plans for UFC on FS1 3 to land in Porto Alegre, however, are facing an uphill battle. The event may instead see the promotion circle back to Belo Horizonte instead. It’s unclear what the issue is with Porto Alegre, but UFC executive Marshall Zelaznik, following Saturday night’s UFC on Fuel TV 10 in Fortaleza, confirmed that there is an issue and that the promotion has begun formulating a back-up plan.

The fight cards for the first two UFC events on the yet-to-be-launched Fox Sports 1 network are filling up fast. The latest addition to UFC on Fox Sports 1: Condit vs. Kampmann – the second of the initial UFC events on the new sports network – is a welterweight bout between Robert Whittaker and Court McGee . The bout is a battle between past The Ultimate Fighter champions. Whittaker (11-2) won The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes season in Australia, defeating Brad Scott by unanimous decision in the season’s finale. He followed that up with a third-round knockout of Colton Smith at UFC 160 over Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas. McGee (14-3) won The Ultimate Fighter Season 11 in the U.S

Chael Sonnen offered up his services to fight Mauricio “Shogun” Rua when the Brazilian’s UFC 161 co-main event opponent, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, had to drop out of the fight due to back problems. Shogun immediately accepted, but the fight isn’t going to happen at UFC 161 on June 15 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It will instead be the headlining bout at UFC on FS1 1 on Aug. 17 in Boston.

TUF 17 Winner Kelvin Gastelum Draws Paulo Thiago in his Welterweight Debut

The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum is dropping down to the welterweight division to face Paulo Thiago on the second UFC on Fox Sports 1 card. UFC on FS1 2 is slated Aug. 28 in Indianapolis. Gastelum confirmed the news via Twitter on Tuesday. Gastelum (6-0) defeated heavily favored Team Sonnen teammate Uriah Hall at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale on April 13 in his official UFC debt, becoming the youngest winner in the reality show’s history. In the days following the win, the 21-year-old announced that he would be dropping from the middleweight division to the 170-pound weight class. His first test at welterweight will be Paulo Thiago.
