Decorated submission grappler Roger Gracie (6-2) plans to move from the U.K. to the U.S. to train full-time at Blackhouse MMA in Southern California. Gracie’s manager, Ed Soares, who also runs the Blackhouse gym, said the switch will help the fighter better prepare for his bouts. “I think he just needs more time to prepare for fights,” Soares today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “In his last few fights, he hasn’t been able to get a full training camp here.” Blackhouse MMA is located in Gardena, Calif., and also hosts top fighters Lyoto Machida , Glover Teixeira , Pedro Rizzo , and ex-champ Anderson Silva , who trains there when not in his native Brazil

Tim Kennedy Apologizes to UFC for Fighter Pay Comments, Says He Was Taken Out of Context

Tim Kennedy earlier this week criticized his employer, the UFC, for how much it pays its fighters, and tried to put into context for fans how difficult it can be to make a living as a professional fighter. On Thursday, however, Kennedy issued a statement on his official Facebook page, retracting his comments and apologizing for them. Kennedy, while a guest on the GrappleTalk podcast, characterized it as “pathetic” that so many fighters had to work a “day job” instead of being able to focus full-time on their fighting careers. Kennedy has various business interests and his military career along with what he makes from fighting, which he said doesn’t amount to much after expenses and taxes. “It would be slim pickings to survive off what I make in fighting,” he told GrappleTalk. “It’s a good thing I have another job because the UFC doesn’t pay very well.” Kennedy said his comments were taken out of context, but accepted responsibility for his statements, apologizing to the UFC, company president Dana White , CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, and matchmaker Joe Silva. Kennedy’s statement: “I recently made comments regarding fighter pay. The intent of these statements was to highlight that professional fighters incur significant expense associated with their preparations to fight and that fighter compensation is still not on par with other major sports.

UFC heavyweight Travis Browne agrees to disagree with sometime training partner Tim Kennedy on the issue of fighter pay. “Everybody has a choice,” Browne told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “You don’t have to fight. You don’t have to be in this business, just like if I want to wake up and eat oatmeal instead of cream of wheat, it’s my choice.” Browne (14-1-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC), who next fights Alistair Overeem (36-12 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC on Fox Sports 1 1, chose to walk away from a successful career as a K-9 trainer in San Diego to join the UFC. He’s been a full-time fighter since. The 30-year-old fighter admitted he’s seen lean times during his tenure in the industry-leading promoter and said managers have helped him make ends meet while he pursued his dreams of becoming a champion. “They helped to get me where I’m at now,” he said. Having won nine fights heading into this past February’s match-up with Mikhail Zayats in the second round of Bellator’s light-heavyweight tournament, Jacob Noe was riding high, maybe too high for his own good. Following a first-round submission loss to Zayats, Noe decided it was time to leave his native Tennessee and make the kind of move necessary to take his career to the next level. “I think I underestimated the guy,” said Noe of his loss to Zayats. “I just went in there without a game plan and tried to fight him and I think it backfired. He had a really good game plan and coaching. I kind of learned my lesson from that. “In Memphis I was kind of the only full-time fighter and didn’t have consistent training partners or experience to work with, so I made the change to Team Syndicate in Las Vegas.” Noe felt the change was a long time coming and the Zayats fight only helped crystalize the need to shake things up. “I always knew that beforehand I wasn’t growing as a fighter and I felt like I needed to make a change,” he said
