The heavyweight division, as defined by the unified rules of MMA via the Association of Boxing Commissions , consists of fighters who are between 206 and 265 pounds. Prior to the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board conceiving a set of rules and weight classes in 2000 that became the base of operations we are now familiar with today, MMA was essentially the Wild West when it started out in the 1990s. From open-weight matches to one-night tournaments, heavyweight fighters and classifications were a common occurrence in MMA’s early days. However, since the early 2000s, the heavyweight classification has largely stayed consistent across major promotions (despite some disarray amongst the lower weight classes).

Former UFC heavyweights Gabriel Gonzaga and Antonio Silva probably had no business fighting – let alone fighting each other – in a bare-knuckle boxing match, but they did anyway on Saturday night at Bare Knuckle FC 8 in Tampa, Fla. And let’s just say it ended how you probably expected, with one of them getting beat down in brutal fashion. As it turned out, the victim was “Bigfoot” Silva, who absorbed an onslaught of punches from Gonzaga in the second round, including a big uppercut and crushing left hand, before crashing hard onto the canvas. Two former UFC heavyweight title challengers will square off in the main event of Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship’s return to Florida. In the main event of BKFC 8, Antonio Silva (19-12 MMA) will take on fellow Brazilian heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga (17-12 MMA).

Oh, heavyweights. Such power. Such promise. Such an endless capacity for boring us to tears when it all goes wrong. A good heavyweight fight is usually brief and brutal, with all the eager anticipation of a high-wire act. But with their often limited cardio and obsessive focus on the singular knockout blow, a bad heavyweight fight is maybe the worst that MMA has to offer.

Gabriel Gonzaga today returned to action after more than two years away when he met Aleksander Emelianenko in Russia. Things were going pretty well for the former UFC title challenger, but the tables quickly turned. Emelianenko (27-7), the brother of former PRIDE champion Fedor Emelianenko, found his way around Gonzaga’s (17-12) grappling game for a second-round TKO win in the heavyweight bout at Russian Cagefighting Championship 2, which took place at KRK Uralets Arena in Yekaterinburg, Sverdlovsk, Russia, and streamed online (via Twitter ): Aleksander Emelianenko finished (TKOd) Gabriel Gonzaga in 2R (RCC2) pic.twitter.com/ahdMYbSKY1 — Jolassanda (@Jolassanda) May 5, 2018 Gonzaga, who retired from MMA following a first-round knockout loss to Derrick Lewis at UFC Fight Night 86 in April 2016, returned to competition for the showdown with Emelianenko. Gabriel Gonzaga has come a lot from hitting the mats as a pure jiu-jitsu practitioner. As of Saturday, the former UFC title challenger is officially a winning professional boxer. Gonzaga (1-0) made a successful pro boxing debut on Rivera Promotions Entertainment’s “New England’s Future 4” card, taking a majority decision over Alejandro Esquilin Santiago (0-1) in the heavyweight co-headliner at DCU Center Exhibition Hall in Worcester, Mass. “Napao” edged out the decision in the four-round fight by scores of 40-36, 40-36 and 38-38. Gonzaga, a 22-fight UFC veteran who unsuccessfully challenged then-UFC champ Randy Couture for the title at UFC 74 in August 2007, hasn’t competed in MMA since a first-round knockout loss to Derrick Lewis at UFC Fight Night 86 in April 2016. He went a forgettable 1-4 in his past five octagon appearances

Gabriel Gonzaga, professional boxer? ‘Napao’ debuts Oct. 28

Well, he won’t be able to throw any head kicks, but Gabriel Gonzaga is going to try his hand at, well, throwing hands at the professional level. A 22-time UFC veteran, Gonzaga (17-11 MMA, 12-10 UFC) will make his pro boxing debut next month in his adopted home of Massachusetts. Rivera Promotions Entertainment officials recently announced that Gonzaga will compete at “New England’s Future 4” on Oct. 28 at DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. “When I first saw Gabriel sparring, I knew he had potential to beat a lot of heavyweights around,” Gonzaga trainer Rocky Gonzalez stated in an official release.
