Several fighters controlled their destinies at Invicta FC 6, including Claudia Gadelha and Leslie Smith . Gadelha stepped up on short notice to fight Ayaka Hamasaki on Saturday night, stepping in for injured strawweight champion Carla Esparza. It was a risky fight for Jewels 115-pound champion Hamasaki, who lost the bout via TKO stoppage to Gadelha. Not only did Hamasaki suffer the first defeat of her career, she also lost her title shot. With the victory, Gadelha earned the shot at Esparza when the champion returns from a knee injury suffered in training. With her unanimous decision victory over Jennifer Maia, Leslie Smith also earned title shot.

One day, Claudia Gadelha might wind up doing something a little more business suit-y. Or maybe she’ll be working for Brazil’s police force. But right now, she’s enjoying being a one-woman force of her own. Gadelha (10-0) makes her Invicta Fighting Championships debut today against Ayaka Hamasaki (9-0), and she’ll be hoping to stay unbeaten. Gadelha was in college studying law, but she put her studies on hold and made fighting her top priority. It hasn’t turned out too badly yet. Norma Rueda Center (2-0) has replaced injured Sarah Schneider (6-6) and now meets fellow strawweight Joanne Calderwood (6-0) at next month’s Invicta FC 6 event. Invicta FC officials recently confirmed an initial report from MMARising.com . Invicta FC 6 takes place July 13 at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Mo. The event airs via regular pay-per-view in North America, and international viewers can watch via an online PPV stream. The event is priced at $14.95. This is the second opponent switch for Calderwood, who initially was slated to fight Claudia Gadelha before the switch to Schneider. Invicta FC 6: Cyborg vs. Coenen II , the promotion’s next event, will be available on traditional cable and satellite provider-based pay-per-view in the United States and Canada. Promotion officials announced the move, a first for the company, on Thursday. Invicta FC 6 features Cris Cyborg vs. Marloes Coenen rematching in a headlining featherweight title bout, while the co-main event features undefeated strawweights Ayaka Hamasaki and Claudio Gadelha. Invicta’s previous events have been available as an online-only pay-per-view on it’s website and via U-Stream. Invicta FC 6 will still be available via U-Stream for international viewers, but will now be available in the U.S. via iN Demand, DISH, and Avail-TVN, and on Bell TV in Canada.

Strawweight Champ Carla Esparza Out of Invicta 6 with Knee Injury

Invicta FC strawweight champion Carla Esparza has been forced out of her scheduled July 13 title defense against Ayaka Hamasaki due to a knee injury. MMAWeekly.com confirmed the news with Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp. It was first reported on Tuesday by MMAFighting.com . Esparza’s injury has caused a shake-up to the Invicta FC 6 fight card and could possibly lead to the crowning of an interim titleholder. Claudia Gadelha, who was originally scheduled to face Joanne Calderwood on the fight card, will now face Hamasaki. Invicta FC officials are waiting to learn how long Esparza’s injury will keep her sidelined before making a decision on whether Hamasaki vs. Gadelha will be for an interim title. The promotion is awaiting commission approval on a new opponent for Calderwood.
