Twenty-nine years after they squared off at UFC 8, two of the more recognizable names from the promotion’s early days recently reunited to look over some hardware earned three decades ago. Still rivals, but now in a lighthearted way, Don Frye and Gary Goodridge traded jokes as the Frye’s belt case was opened and out came the UFC 8 tournament belt.

Today in MMA history: Affliction hosts star-studded ‘Banned’ event

Thirteen years ago today, one of the best heavyweight fight cards in MMA went down in the U.S., but it wasn’t part of the UFC. Back on July 19, 2008, Affliction hosted its inaugural event – Affliction: Banned, which took place at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. This card featured a high-profile, heavyweight matchup in the main event with the legendary Fedor Emelianenko taking on former UFC champion Tim Sylvia . Additionally, Andrei Arlovski fought Ben Rothwell and Josh Barnett took on Pedro Rizzo

Jordan Parsons was 25 with 13 fights as a pro and three more from an amateur career that started when he was just 17. He’d spent a little less than a decade inside MMA gyms had only suffered one loss via knockout. Still, when researchers cut open his brain after Parsons died as a result of injuries sustained in an alleged hit-and-run accident earlier this year, they found the telltale signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy – or CTE – the degenerative brain disease that has plagued athletes in other contact sports from football to boxing to hockey.
