A pair of The Ultimate Fighter winners, Kelvin Gastelum and Court McGee , will face off at UFC on Fox 9. Fox Deportes first reported the news and UFC officials confirmed the match-up on Thursday. Gastelum (7-0) won the seventeenth season of the popular reality show by defeating Uriah Hall by split decision on April 13. In his second UFC fight and his welterweight debut, Gastelum defeated Brian Melancon by submission in the opening round

Less than three weeks after pulling off an upset in his UFC debut, Brian Melancon knows when he’ll be going back to work. Melancon (7-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will step in for the injured Paulo Thiago (15-5 MMA, 5-5 UFC) to meet Kevin Gastelum (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night 27 next month. The news comes from Tuesday night’s edition of FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight.” UFC Fight Night 27 (formerly UFC on FOX Sports 1 2) takes place Aug. 28 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The main card airs on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 2 and Facebook.

Brazilian grappling specialist Paulo Thiago (15-5 MMA, 5-5 UFC) has been forced out of a planned UFC Fight Night 27 contest with “The Ultimate Fighter 17″ winner Kelvin Gastelum (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC). Combate.com first reported the withdrawal, pinning the decision on a knee injury suffered this past week. UFC officials are now seeking a replacement opponent for Gastelum. Featuring a headlining contest between Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann , UFC Fight Night 27 takes place at Aug. 28 at Indianapolis’ Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The evening’s main card airs on FOX Sports 1 following preliminary bouts that air on FOX Sports 2 and stream on Facebook. Picked last on “TUF 17,” Gastelum outwrestled and outworked four straight middleweight opponents to earn a spot in the tournament final at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale. Much like Kelvin Gastelum at the recent TUF 17 Finale, Leonardo Santos pulled off the upset at UFC on Fuel TV 10 in Fortaleza, Brazil, on Saturday night, winning the second season of The Ultimate Fighter Brazil. William “Patolino” Macario came into the fight the heavy favorite, which was no surprise considering his impressive performances on the reality show, and seeing as how Santos only made his way into the final as an injury replacement for Santiago Ponzinibbio, who defeated him in their semifinal match-up. Not many gave the 33-year-old, skinny jiu-jitsu fighter much of a chance, and in the opening round it looked like they might be right to think that way. Patolino manhandled Santos throughout most of the opening round, countering Santos’ strikes by clinching and powering him to the mat, landing some solid ground and pound throughout. The second stanza was a complete 180, however. As Patolino tired, Santos landed more of his strikes. He clinched Patolino and tried to trip him to the mat, but Patolino grabbed the fence, which forced Santos to the bottom as they landed. The referee, however, clearly saw the fence grab and restarted them standing in the middle of the Octagon

TUF 17 Winner Kelvin Gastelum Draws Paulo Thiago in his Welterweight Debut

The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum is dropping down to the welterweight division to face Paulo Thiago on the second UFC on Fox Sports 1 card. UFC on FS1 2 is slated Aug. 28 in Indianapolis. Gastelum confirmed the news via Twitter on Tuesday. Gastelum (6-0) defeated heavily favored Team Sonnen teammate Uriah Hall at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale on April 13 in his official UFC debt, becoming the youngest winner in the reality show’s history. In the days following the win, the 21-year-old announced that he would be dropping from the middleweight division to the 170-pound weight class. His first test at welterweight will be Paulo Thiago.
