Ex-UFC fighter George Roop realizes dream with Cannabis Campus

Former UFC bantamweight George Roop has been in the cannabis industry longer than he’s been fighting. Because medical marijuana has only been legal since 2010, and the 37-year-old Roop has been growing since he was 18, he hasn’t advertised this fact. It’s no wonder – even MMA industry vets who’ve tried to keep their cultivation operations a secret have met unhappy ends . Happily retired from MMA, Roop is out in the open about his lifelong passion, and he’s attacking the cannabis business with the same zeal he had for fighting. In four months, he plans to open the Tucson Cannabis Campus, a 40,000 square foot cultivation facility that can produce 100 pounds of cannabis every five to seven days. Roop, 37, has prepared the move long before he hung up his gloves.

Filed under: News , Videos Former UFC fighter George Roop is facing a six-month recovery period after breaking his leg in a ROAD FC bout last weekend. Roop (15-13-1), fighting for the first time since the end of a 16-bout UFC-WEC run, snapped his leg early in the first round of his bout with featherweight Yoon Jun Lee (11-2) in Saturday’s Xiaomi ROAD FC 031 headliner. The event took place in Seoul, South Korea, where Roop is still recovering following a compound fracture to his tibia. “The break was clean and not fragmented,” officials stated in a press release. “Roop will undergo immediate surgery and recovery in Wonju.

The 28-year-old Font (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who faces UFC newcomer and former training partner Joey Gomez (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on Sunday at UFC Fight Night 81, might have won a “Fight of the Night” bonus two years ago with his debut performance against George Roop . But the way he sees it, the result was no great surprise. “He was a fighter on his way out,” Font told MMAjunkie at an open workout in support of his UFC Fight Pass-streamed fight at Sunday’s event at Boston’s TD Garden.

Takeya Mizugaki and George Roop Fighters from Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 75 event took home Reebok sponsorship pay totaling $102,500, the lowest total payout from the 10 events held under the program thus far. “UFC Fight Night 75: Barnett vs. Nelson” took place at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. In the FOX Sports 1-broadcast headliner, Barnett earned a convincing decision victory over heavyweight slugger Roy Nelson. While no one on the card hit the maximum non-title payout figure of $20,000, it was a pair of WEC veterans who topped the list of earnings, as Takeya Mizugaki (21-9-2 MMA, 8-4 UFC) and George Roop (15-12-1 MMA, 5-8 UFC) each scored $15,000. Roop’s (15-12-1 MMA, 5-8 UFC) response was to use his length to smother Mizugaki (21-9-2 MMA, 8-4 UFC) against the fence. But even that wasn’t enough to negate the damage he took, and judges went the other way.
