Former NFL’ers turned UFC employees Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub met in the cage at UFC 165 Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Unlike their previous occupations, this one allows powerful blows to the head of their opponents. In fact, it’s encouraged. However, for the first 30 seconds of their showdown on Saturday, nobody told these two heavyweight sluggers, as there was not a single strike thrown. The former training partners and castmates on The Ultimate Fighter 10 met in the center of the Octagon without touching gloves. The pre-fight trash talk was hot and heavy between the former friends, and after the first 30 seconds had ticked away, the two big men started exchanging with reckless abandon.

At this point in his career, Anthony Perosh is a man who seems to know pretty much what he wants. That includes who and where he'd like to fight – and that he'll hang up his gloves when he's good and ready, and that time sure isn't coming soon. Perosh (13-7 MMA, 3-4 UFC) on Saturday meets Vinny Magalhaes (10-6 MMA, 1-3 UFC) on the main card of UFC 163, which takes place at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro in Magalhaes' home country of Brazil. They'll fight prior to the pay-per-view portion of the show after on FX. Although non-Brazilian UFC fighters have what amounts to a horrible record when fighting Brazilians in Brazil, it was Perosh who wanted to sign on the dotted line to go into enemy territory. "I've been to Brazil many times to compete in (Brazilian jiu-jitsu), but never in MMA," Perosh told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio)

Working out with Frankie Edgar and Roger Gracie has Renzo Gracie thinking about a return to the cage. Whether it's in the UFC or somewhere else remains to be seen, but the MMA forefather said he could be fighting in the next five months. "I've been training with these guys, and they're as tough as you can get," Gracie (13-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC) told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). "I've been hanging around with them and having fun, so for sure I'll be ready [by] the end of the year to have some fun too." Of course, the jiu-jitsu master, who's been a threat to any mere hoodlum looking for trouble on the streets, would rather have his fun in the octagon. That's where he last strapped on gloves and fought, and while his UFC 112 bout with UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes didn't go his way – and wasn't exactly must-see TV – he remains under contract with the promotion

LAS VEGAS – Dave Herman landed three strikes – four if you count touching gloves with Gabriel Gonzaga. But Gonzaga had four of his own, and they were all he needed. Herman wanted to establish distance early with kicks – but then ate a right hand that led to a Gonzaga TKO win just 17 seconds into the fight. The heavyweight bout was part of today's UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on FX ahead of a main card on pay-per-view. Herman kicked to the body early, trying to create that distance he might need against the heavy-handed Brazilian. A second push-kick to the body came right after the first. But it was his third kick that led to his quick dismantling.

Despite being told no by boss Dana White four years ago, Anderson Silva said he still wants to fight boxer Roy Jones Jr. before hanging up his gloves. "Of course I want to fight him, and maybe after this fight against (Chris) Weidman, regardless of the outcome, I would love to fight him," Silva said through an interpreter. "He's already said he'd fight me, so that's something I'd really like to happen." Now, there's just two things in the way. One is the undefeated Weidman (9-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC), who will try to be the first man to beat Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC) in the octagon in 17 outings and take the Brazilian's middleweight belt, which he's held for 10 fights. That will happen next Saturday at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena for UFC 162.

After nearly 10 years in the MMA game, Megumi Fujii will hang up the gloves – after one final fight. Fujii (26-2) on Saturday announced her pending retirement on her Twitter account, saying she will compete for Vale Tudo Japan on October 3, then call it quits. Of her 26 career wins, the 39-year-old has 19 by submission and has never been stopped – her only two losses have gone the distance. Fujii started her MMA career an amazing 22-0 before suffering her first loss, a split-decision setback to Zoila Frausto Gurgel at Bellator 34 in a fight to determine the promotion's first 115-pound women's champion. Prior to that loss, after fighting just three times outside her native Japan in her first 19 fights, she came to the States and picked up three wins for Bellator.

At 37, Canadian Sean Pierson is growing into comfort inside the octagon. Now, he needs to get moving before he hangs up his gloves. "Everybody is struggling for me to chase my dream, and I can't be selfish forever," he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "I'm going to have to end that soon." The end is not near, Pierson (13-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) cautioned. He's still got plenty of fights left in him, including his next, a meeting with fellow welterweight and injury replacement Kenny Robertson (12-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at UFC 161, which takes place Saturday at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
