UFC middleweight Tom Watson (16-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) may not be a household name or ranked fighter, but that doesn’t mean his aspirations fall short of earning a world championship. “Whenever I’m with an organization, the goal is to become the champion and – that’s what the belt represents,” Watson told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “The UFC is the same when I signed. I signed to be the champion, I didn’t sign to face some UFC fighters and have a good time.”  After splitting his first two trips to the octagon, the 31-year-old is just days away from his opportunity to truly let fans know what he’s all about when he makes his UFC pay-per-view debut against Thales Leites (20-4 MMA, 5-3 UFC) at UFC 163. Leites was a UFC title challenger himself once upon a time, and a victory over him, especially inside the hostile HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, would raise Watson’s stock higher than ever before. Bantamweight Ed West granted release from Bellator, looks for quick turnaround

As far as breakups go, Ed West ‘s departure from Bellator MMA sounds like the start of a courtship, not a divorce. But sometimes in the pro sports world, athletes and their bosses part ways amicably – or mostly amicably. That appears to be the case with West and the California-based promotion. West (18-7 MMA, 4-3 BFC) on Tuesday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that he has been granted his release from Bellator and will be exploring the free-agent MMA market, and Bellator officials confirmed the fighter’s release. “I spent three years with Bellator, and I had a really good time with them,” West said.

Video: Watch UFC 162′s Dennis Siver and his spinning stuff

Kicking off Saturday’s UFC 162 pay-per-view main card is an intriguing bout between featherweight contenders Dennis Siver (21-8 MMA, 10-5 UFC) and Cub Swanson (19-5 MMA, 4-1 UFC). While Swanson, who’s overcome injuries to post a four-fight winning streak, has garnered much of the attention ahead of the Las Vegas event, it’s probably a good time to remember some of Siver’s early work in the UFC. Although the German fighter hasn’t posted a knockout win in nearly four years, his current 10-2 run includes some memorable spinning stuff back in 2009. In one of the bouts, against Nate Mohr , Siver kicked off his second UFC stint in thrilling fashion. Check out the video above for the stoppage. Tim Boetsch certainly isn’t alone in the club of fighters who take the sport seriously. Just try getting other people to understand that fighting in Las Vegas isn’t an excuse to have a good time on the job. Boetsch (16-5 MMA, 7-4 UFC) next week takes on Mark Munoz (12-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) to open up the main card of UFC 162, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Sin City. Vegas over Fourth of July? Come on – gotta be time for a little fun, right?
