Meek (9-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) takes on Australia’s Jake Matthews in a welterweight contest Saturday (Sunday locally) at UFC on ESPN+ 26 in Auckland, New Zealand, and says the guidance he’s received from former UFC lightweight title challenger Gray Maynard has taken him to a new level. “I’ve got Gray Maynard in my corner, and that’s something special for me,” Meek told MMA Junkie in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS – Gray Maynard no longer is with the UFC. “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 alum has competed almost his entire pro MMA career under the UFC banner, but now is ready to move on to the next chapter. Maynard (13-7-1 MMA, 11-7-1 UFC) told MMA Junkie he has parted ways with the UFC and is still trying to figure out which promotion he’ll end up with next. “I don’t know – we’re trying to work some stuff out,” Maynard said. “(I’m) not with the UFC anymore, so I’m trying to work some stuff out, check what’s going to make sense, and probably be at featherweight. So that’s the next step.

The lightweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC 229 event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of additional prelims on FS1 and the main card on pay-per-view. Maynard took the center at the opening bell, and both men struck a low stance as they looked to attack. Lentz was the busier man in the early going, landing a few slapping leg kicks and several stiff punches up top.

UFC’s Gray Maynard says MMA training ‘in its infancy still,’ hopes to catalyst evolution

Gray Maynard has been fighting MMA for more than 12 years. He’s seen plenty during that time, but one thing that stands out to him is how fight preparation is done. Maynard (13-6-1 MMA, 11-6-1 UFC), who meets Nik Lentz (28-9-2 MMA, 12-6-1 UFC) in his next bout at UFC 229 on Oct. 6 in Las Vegas, has traveled the world throughout his career, training at many different gyms with several different coaches. He’s becoming increasingly aware of the dos and don’ts, and said his goal is to pass that knowledge along and find ways to do it better. “Over the course of my career I’ve been going to different camps, and it’s something that’s always interested me, is how can we make this sport better through training?” Maynard told MMAjunkie Radio.
