Photo by Mike Roach/Zuffa LLC Dustin Poirier really is going for the fairytale ending to his career with a fight booked against Max Holloway in his home state of Louisiana at UFC 318 . But if there’s one universal rule that seems to be true for MMA, it’s that no one is ever truly retired. While the entire pay-per-view card is being built around Poirier’s swan song, there are just too many examples worth mentioning where fighters say they’re done only to return for another fight

RIO DE JANEIRO – It started with a left hook in the opening seconds. Cezar Ferreira landed it, Thiago Santos felt it, and it signaled the beginning of the end as Ferreira seized the opportunity to lock up a guillotine choke for the submission finish 47 seconds into the fight. The middleweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro's HSBC Arena. It aired as part of the pay-per-view main card following prelims on FX and Facebook. Ferreira hardly broke a sweat in his victorious effort. The winner of the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil" had Santos hurt early, and didn’t let up. He locked on the arm-in guillotine while Santos was still woozy, and that was all it took to force the tap

RIO DE JANEIRO – If Viscardi Andrade was looking to make a big first impression in his UFC debut, consider it done. The Brazilian opened up Saturday's card with a 96-second TKO win against Bristol Marunde, putting together a 1-2 combination to get things started, then kept the pressure on the American until he got the stoppage. The welterweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro's HSBC Arena. It streamed on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FX and the pay-per-view main card. The two felt each other out early, jabbing and kicking. But then Andrade put together a perfectly placed left-right combination, with the massive right hand dropping Marunde to his knees. Andrade followed him quickly, and looked to lock up a guillotine choke on the ground. Marunde tried to recover in the ground scramble, and though he briefly got closer to his feet, Andrade dropped him again

That didn't take long. Jorge Masvidal moved to 2-0 in the UFC on Saturday, and he's already got his next assignment. Masvidal (25-7 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has been booked for a lightweight fight against Rustam Khabilov (16-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC). FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight" correspondent Ariel Helwani reported the news as part of Tuesday night's episode. The fight reportedly will take place in November on a yet-to-be-announced FOX Sports 1 card. Masvidal this past Saturday submitted Michael Chiesa in the second round at UFC on FOX 8, which took place at KeyArena in Seattle. Despite a rough first round in which Masvidal was dropped by a Chiesa left hand, he went on to hand Chiesa his first career loss with a guillotine D'Arce choke. Masvidal, a former lightweight title challenger in Strikeforce, now has won three straight since his loss to Gilbert Melendez for that belt in December 2011.

The 10 guillotine choke finishes on Leeroy Barnes ' record are no accident. The U.K.-based fighter told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) that it's just a matter of time before he's able to secure the hold, and the tapout, from his opponent. At Cage Warriors 57, which takes place Saturday at Echo Arena in Liverpool, England, he'll be looking for the moment at which his opponent, Norman Paraisy (11-3-2), gives him the go-ahead to start cranking with his favorite application of the submission. "Everyone thinks it just happens, but I always go for the arm-in guillotine," said Barnes (12-10). "People feel safe when the arm is in, like they can defend it. But the way I do it is different; I set it up from a slightly different angle.

Following Josh Burkman 's submission victory over Jon Fitch earlier this month in World Series of Fighting 3's headliner, referee Steve Mazzagatti came under fire for an apparent late stoppage. One fellow ref, though, has come to his defense. Veteran official "Big" John McCarthy, who's been policing the cage for two decades, doesn't agree with the recent scathing criticism from Dana White . Following UFC 161, the UFC president, who's long spoken out against Mazzagatti, said the ref is "dangerous" and "will seriously hurt somebody." McCarthy, though, said the nature of the stoppage – Burkman actually broke the guillotine choke and showed Fitch was unconscious, before Mazzagatti noticed – wasn't as serious as some have made it out to be. While McCarthy said Mazzagatti should have shifted to the other side of the fighters to get a better look at Fitch while he was in the choke, he said little damage was done in the June 14 fight

As the second episode of "Fight Master" gets underway, there is precious little time wasted. It's right to the action as the cast of 32 hopefuls continues to be whittled down to a list of 16 contestants who will move into the house and compete for $100,000 and a spot in an upcoming Bellator MMA tournament and the title of "Fight Master." SIXTH ELIMINATION FIGHT: Mike "The Zombie" Dubois (3-0) vs. Rob "Robocop" Mills (8-2) Dubois walks right into a guillotine choke but patiently waits it out, escapes and reverses courses by launching punches and latching on to his own guillotine choke. The submission is deep, and Mills quickly taps. COACH SELECTION: Frank Shamrock makes a strong push to score Dubois, and the fighter willingly accepts the invite
